sleeping /eating aids | ADHD Information
My son was just diagnosed with ADHD. He has been taking Concerta 18mg for 6 weeks. He has lost 2lbs and has a hard time falling asleep. I try to keep him eating, he is very slim naturally. Has anyone found anything that helps, naturally, to fall asleep? Help stimulate hunger? Thanks in advance for your help.My son has ADHD and we give him his medicine after he eats in the morning. They say not to do a high fat breakfast - but it works for him. He eats nothing during the day, has an Ensure drink when we have dinner and eats by the truck load by 8:30 PM. He is on Daytrana (10mg) and Ritalin in the AM (5mg).
We found a wonderful, over the counter sleep aide that I swear by. We give our son 3 of the pills and the Dr. said there was nothing wrong with it (but check with yours before proceeding). It's called Hyland's Calm Forte. We buy ours at Walgreen's and Walmart. Hyalnds has wonderful products (www.hylands.com). Also - my son is 5 and this sounds nuts but we bath him with Johnson's Lavender bath and it really helps too. Just a bed time routine we stick to is good for him. I hope this helps.
I give him his pill after breakfast too and he seems to want to eat at very late hours. Ensure is a great idea and I will call my son's MD about the Hyland's. Thanks! Our doc reccommended Melatonin for sleep. I have found that Kal makes a sweet tasting lozenge that my son will take with no problem. It can be broken and works FAST! Good luck!Melatonin, .33mgs helps dd sleep naturally. I would not go higher than 3 mgs for ANY reason though. There is a medicine named periactin (sp?) that can help with appetite. It's an old- fashioned antihistamine that isn't prescribed so much anymore because it made people gain weight. Because it's an antihistamine, it also helps with sleep. My son took it for a while but it started to become less effective with time. That may not happen to you, however. The doctor seemed to think that it was a pretty innocuous medication.
My son also takes Concerta...36mgs. and sleep was a constant issue. Our doctor put him on Miltonin (sp?) and it has made a world of difference. He has come downstairs every night about 9-10 p.m., makes himself a sandwhich and he's out for the night... he hasn't gained more than 2 pounds in the last two years and about 6 inches, but we're maintaining. We've learned to let him eat anything in his drawer and fridge shelf whenever he wants. We have no sweet things or high fat items at our house and that has helped with his behavior/moods (and the rest of us have lost weight for the better!)... Keep hanging in there....
