My kids' doc uses the same meds for all sub-types of ADHD with success. It is more of finding the best med for the individual. If anxiety is caused by the difficulties dealing with ADHD, then it can resolve with meds. If it is a separate issue, it can be made worse by the stimulants. Do you find your anxiety increasing on the Adderall? If so, you may wish to discuss trying stratera or adding guanfacine. Guanfacine (Tenex) is a blood pressure med that helps with hyperactivity, impulsivity, defiance, sleep issues and weight issues. When combined with a stimulant, the combo works better than either alone and may allow a lower dose of stimulant to be effective (this is how my youngest uses it). There is a very long Tenex thread in the medication section.
Is your prescribing doc a psychiatrist or GP? Just asking to get an idea on the type of doc because some are more experienced with med managment and dealing with co-existing issues like anxiety.
The anxiety comes and goes with the Adderral. I feel relaxed, then kind of jittery, and then none when it wears off about 5 hrs later. Funny you should mention hyperactivity, impulsivity, defiance, sleep issues. They are my issues too. I see a P-DOC, although she is not well versed in ADHD. I mentioned Straterra, she said she would prescribe it but at the same time she doesn't have much faith in it....
BTW, I also feel kind of spacey with adderral and a little lazy. Is that a side effect? I also quite caffeine cold turkey the last few days. I don't know if that is part of the equation too
Thank you very much. I'm a bit hesistent of the side effect profile of desimpramine though.

I hear you.
But as an F.Y.I. my daughter has had side effects from every single medication she has ever tried, this is the only one she has not/ The only issue she has had is a little dry mouth and as we've upped the dose we've had to spread it out through the day otherwise she feels a littel tired. Se's eating well, sleeping great, is happy no tics (she developed motor tics on stimulants), anxiety is down, she seems happy and calm.
brutus1 my daughter has increased anxiety with most stimulants. We are currently uisng Desipramine, it is a tricyclic antidepressant, but has greatly helped her anxiety and "hyperness" menaing lots of fidgeting. It's helped focus, we're not sure yet if it's helped enough for school, but at home is able to stay on task (most times) and follow through. It is also in her system 24 hours which is another bonus!
that said, if you've not tried any other stimukants yet, you may want to try that first as it does not mean you will see an increase in anxiety with all stims juts becasue you do with the adderall.
