How to stop the noise?? | ADHD Information
Hopefully the tenex will do the trick. I have no experience with that so I don't know. If the gum helps at home and you think it will at school, then you can press your point, especially if your son has an IEP. The school has an obligation towards your son. I'm not saying to march in there screaming, especially if you have a good rapport with the teacher, but be firm if you think it will help. You can always work with the teacher to set limits and rules (e.g. one stick at a time, keeping paper at his desk to throw away old gum, no bubbles or popping). Good luck.
we've been dealing with the noise since he found his voice, and he's 5 1/2 now. I have to say that it has gotten a bit better in the past 2 years, even started to ebb off a bit before medication, so I'm hoping he'll out grow it. The hardest part of the day in first thing in the morning when he wakes up. He lays in bed and its just noise after noise....I wouldn't care so much if it didn't wake up his little sister across the hall. We've tried gum, he hates it......
Our son used to hum to concentrate and is now in a class with adhd/asperger/other kids. Out of 7 kids, 3 are hummers.
Our son rarely does this anymore, so it may be something that he just grew out of. Our son also has SPD, as it's now called.
I love this board...I never knew until now that other ADHD kids made noise.
My son, here now for six months (from Vietnam) is 7 years old. Until his
adderal kicks in in the morning (about an hour), he makes 'animal noises'. I
call it my hour of dealing with an emotionally disturbed child. I find it quite
distressing, but once the adderal takes effect, the noise stops. Can anyone
tell me why some ADHD kids make this noise?
Nina, mother of 9, 8 adopted internationally. My 10 year old has always been a hummer. It drives
me crazy, but he doesn't even know that he is doing
it.
I asked the doctor about it and she told me it was
quite common. She said that he needs the
humming to keep his mind going when a task is
boring. Kind of like the way some ADHD kids have to
fidget with something in order to listen in class. It
always seemed counterintuitive, but I don't have
ADHD!
I was told to let it go. If I try to get him to stop, it will
only create stress for him and he will expend all his
energy on NOT humming. Also, if he does stop, he
will just replace it with something else, and the
something else may be even less acceptable.
Can anyone tell me why some ADHD kids make this noise?
I'm not an expert on ADHD by no means. But my son and I have it, or at least I think I have it. I think we make noise because of two things... (1) It calms us when we get anxious. (2) It helps us put our thought into a type of order, or rhythm.
Still, I don't know, but I've thought about it and that's my personal opinion.
I wish I could simply let it go (and do often at home), but in the classroom it is becoming an issue. His teacher is VERY patient and understands what we are dealing with but has to draw the line when it is becoming too distracting during quite times. I should also add that it would be nice if it was only humming but it ranges from that to popping or squishing sounds he makes with his mouth. You can ask him over and over to stop but he will inevitably revert back.
