My son just seen a pycictrist and she uped his risperdal to .25 mg in the morning and at night.  She also said that he has asperger's and adhd, he's only 5 by the way.  This is the second dose (.25 mg) in the morning he has taken, the other .25 mg he's been taking for a year.  I just got a note from his teacher today saying that he broke a braclet and was very defiante when they told him to go to time out for 5 minutes.  She also said he's very unfocused and fidgetiy.  My question is if any one has experienced this with their child and what to do about it.

NNjpolive,

One thing a therapist helped us with is understanding what 'disorder' causes which actions. For instance, my son is ADHD and ODD, so if he breaks a bracelet, I have to figure out if it's the ADHD fidgety and hyperactivity, or is it him just being destructive for attention or out of spite. If your 5 yr old is fidgety, is he trying to find things to keep busy and to channel his energy? My son broke a ton of things before he started ADHD meds (he missed an ice cream party for breaking a ruler!). My son had chew necklaces, mini marbles, elastic bands, and clay to keep his hands busy while trying to pay attention. This was before meds. Now with the Concerta, it's no longer a problem. And he is much less destructive. My personal experience has been that treating the ADHD first has helped all the other symptoms quite a bit.

Please research both disorders thoroughly. I'm assuming he met the criteria for Asperger's and she explained to you what it is and WHY she is sure at 5, that he has it?

Most adhd children will have some defiance going on. My son has some destructive behaviors at school that he just doesn't do at home.

Read all the threads you can. The risperdal is really for mood, not for fidgetiness/unfocussed-ness (I made up a new word.)

You provide treatment and obtain services from the school as needed.

Risperdal is used for many disorders, including aspergers. My youngest would get sleepy during the day once we got to an effective dose (evenly split between am and pm), so we moved the entire dose to the night time. Other parents have reported anxiety increase on risperdal, but positive effects on similar meds. Everyone is different.

Let the doc know about the behavior so she can make adjustments and/ or tell you what to look for, etc.
