Melatonin | ADHD Information

I know alot of people here say stay low but my 9 year old is on 5 mg Melatonin Lozenges for sleep. This was suggested by both his doctors and psychiatrist. He told me to go to 10 mg but I think that is high. We have no problems. But obviously the less you can use the better. We started out lower before the stims.

The lozenge is by KAL is a melt away and sweet and you can break it and it works fast 15-30 min. We love it so far.

Thank you for all your advice:-)

I have been using the liquid 1mg dropper the night he had the nightmares, so we had a long week-end and I did not use the melatonin.  I will try half the dosage tonight and see what happens.

Thanks again for all your help!!

My 6 year old daughter is on Concerta 18mg. She takes Melatonin at night to help her sleep. I give her 3mgs (3 of the 1mg disolvable pills) With her we started out with 1mg and increased it slowly. 3mg's is the right dose for her. She actually has the reverse effect with the bad dreams.. she'll ask me for some Melatonin because she had nightmares on some nights that I didn't give it to her (Don't give the Melatonin on weekends or school holidays when she's not taking the Concerta).

However, I do understand what you're saying. I take Focalin XR and sometimes use Melatonin for myself to help me sleep. I don't have nightmares every time I use it, but I have had some disturbing dreams a few times.
We just discontinued Clonidine and started Melatonin instead.  All  I could find were capsules in too large a dose, so I went with the liquid form.  The dr. recommended .5 mg.  My son has been waking from bad dreams- this only happened once in about a year on Clonidine.  But the Clonidine had become inconsistent in helping my son fall asleep & the dr. didn't want to up the dose.

Hi,

Yes, I have heard that too high of a dose can cause nightmares. Also, my children did better with a liquid melatonin. I am not sure why maybe it's better absorbed.

Try using 1/2 or 1/3 of the pill, too much can and will cause nightmares, better to start low.

Hi I am new to posting on these boards but have been lurking for a few months.  My 6 yo son has been on Daytrana 10 mgs for two months but is having a hard time falling asleep.  I just tried melatonin 1mg and last night he woke up crying and very upset about bad dreams.

Has anyone heard of this? I have just starting the melatonin and maybe the dose is too high or maybe just a coeincidene (?)  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
