alcohol and adhdSome people with ADD drink to cover up their problem (just like people with other problems sometimes do). Alcohol initially can make an ADD person feel better, especially when socializing, etc. But when the use becomes regular or excessive, it can have unpredictable effects. Some people get happy and silly, some get stupid, some get just plain mean. And one person can phase through any or all of these during the course of a drunk. I have known several people who start drinking and get fun-loving and happy. A few more and they get shall we say "flirtatious". Then a few more and they get sad. Then a few more and they just want to fight. Plus there are all the psychological and emotional problems that result from drinking. So it gets tough to tell what is causing what. I have a question and please pardon my ignorance. My husband was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and still shows symptoms as an adult. I know as a child he was treated with Ritalin - now since Ritalin is a stimulant - is it a big leap to say that possibly alcohol may have the reverse effect on someone with ADHD - causing irritability and more prone to being argumentative? I'm having a tough time and find him irrational and unreasonable most of the time - having absurd reactions to small problems. Any ideas? Thank you.
