I don’t want him to medicate!

My son is 6, recently diagnosed with borderline ADHD, slightly hyper.  His BIG problem is not being able to pay attention and he is jittery, always moving some part of his body.  He loses focus at school easily and has to be redirected.

He was supposed to start Concerta, can't swallow the pill (can't crush it either, it's time released).  His doc will be changing his meds next week, when he returns from vacation.  The more I think about, the more I wonder if I can just redirect my attention on natural treatments.    I know there's tons of books and stuff on Natural Remedies and with his borderline diagnosis, I am thinking he really can do without medicine.  He'll be going to see his child psychologist in 2 weeks and I'll talk to him about it too, but most doctors just seem to point to medicine, the easier way out.  I'm really worried about him falling farther behind in school, he's repeated kindergarten already.

Anyone have luck with natural remedies?  IF so, where did you find your info?  It seems that if our bodies are lacking in a chemical, we should be able to find what he is lacking in our foods we eat, not from a pharmacy.

Heseemsok - I know your fear of medications.  For 2 years we had tried everything natural, looked at every other possibility than adhd because we didn't want to have to medicate - had enlarged tonsils taken out (enlarged tonsils exhibit signs of adhd), had allergy testing done, replaced our heating/cooling system at home, removed food additives/dyes, tried natural remedy called "Focus" and "brightspark".  Nothing that we tried worked.  It was the beginning of first grade that we finally admitted to ourselves that we needed help to help our son.  When we first discussed the possibility of the ADHD with our doctor several years ago, he did say to try everything natural as possible before they medicate.

Unforutantely, they had to medicate.  He was starting to get into trouble at school, couldn't concentrate and was starting to allinate his friends.  He was first placed on Strattera which helped with his anger/anexity issues.  After 1 month of that they switched to Adderrall XR because he still couldn't focus.  The Adderrall XR has done wonders.  He is now a loving child again, has his friends back, is focusing at school, helping others and went from the bottom of his class to the top of his class.

Well I just wanted to let you know that I know how scared you are about medication as my husband and I were there before.  but in all honesty, i'm glad we did because it has truly helped him.

We had tried everything prior to giving in to the medication, we really had no choice he wass constantly having issues in kindergarten and daycare. We ahd tryed herbal, diets and behavior modifaction but Cody has extremem ADHD and is being re tested for ODD, OCD, and other disorders.

If he was told he had mild and you havent given all your resourses a try then go for it try them, every child is diffent and maybe just by the teacher tapping him on the arm may work.

My 7 year old may have mild ADHD but we are not testing him, he talks constantly and sometimes gets hyper but we can control that so we didnt test him. the teacher will stand next ot him and hold her hand on his arm to remind him that he is talking.

You just have to try what you think is best, if it does not work - that is okay, keep trying.  There is no failures in parenting, except for the ones that give up.

I have taken my son off meds, due to my fears of them etc, but it did not work out.  But every experience is different.  You may be able to pull it off.

Try see how you go - if it does not work - you know you can go back to meds.
