OMG what r these crazy nonsense sounds | ADHD Information

Share
Okay...I think it only fair that I give a brief back round on my Dylan. He is
9 yrs. old and in the 3rd grade. Without going into to much detail let me
just say he was a VERY SICK little baby. He basically lived in a hospital
from 9 months until 4 yrs. old. He has ADHD, epilepsy, central apnea
with Hypersomina and insomnia. Yeah...get the picture of what my house
is like on a daily bases.

He has in the past month started this noise making...and it is driving me
up the wall. Nothing can make him stop. I have tried everything. And
within a few minutes he is back to doing it again. And he just looks at me
like I am crazy. I honestly and starting to think he doesn't even know that
he is doing it sometimes. When I look at him and say, "DYLAN!" He looks
at me like he is completely confussed and says, "what????" OMG....IT IS
KILL ME.

He is also started biting his nails and the skin around them. I mean to
the point on two nails there is little to no nail left. And when I ask him if
it hurts he says no. That he can't feel it, and that he does think he
doesn't that often, but doesn't know why it is that bad.

What is wrong with my son? I mean...is this part of ADHD or what? I feel
like such a bad mom at moments because by 7 pm or so I am so
frustrated and irritated I just want to scream and pull out my hair. I mean
why would a child bite his nails off, and can't remember just to stop
making these crazy nonsense sounds. I have been trying to get him in
with his nuerologist, but the soonest appointment they have is October
29. I am not sure what to do...????

Does anyone have any ideas or input. This is the first time I have done
one of these. I am just so confussed as to what I can do for him or to
help him. Any input is wonderful...THANK YOU!!!

My son bites his nails and skin around it. He does it until they are red and sore. I think it is from his meds or anxiety. He doesn't do it daily, but he still does it. Teachers have even mentioned it!

I wish I had an answer, but I don't. My son is 10 with adhd and sensory integration.

I think the humming clicking is a vocal tic. I'd talk to his doctor about it. Adderall can increase anxiety. Maybe you can try a different stim.
The noises may not be a tic.  They may a form of stimming.  It is a comfort thing.  Just like some kids are head bangers or rockers, some make noises. Talk to his neuro.
Good point grannyFran--I forgot about the self-comfort thing.

Me, as strange as it sounds--I bite my nails to help concentration. I tend to do it most when I am reading to help pay attention. On computer, or while doing art a lot--they grow out.

When I was a kid, I rocked and sang for self-comfort.

We're all weird in our own ways
Well, first let me say thank you. It is nice to know that I have others who
share in these frustrations. I was being to think I was the only one. I
mean I see other parents at his school and our church with children with
special needs and none of them seem to be as "frazzeled or stress out" as
I am...so I was being to think it was just my inablities as a mom or he was
just the worst case of this ever...thanks!

He does take meds....several of them. He is his current meds and doses:

1) Adderall XR...20mg...morning dose only

2) Adderall...10mg...morning dose only

3) Depicoat (spelled the way sounds...not right)...200mg(total)...100mg
given in morning and 100mg given in evening

4) Mirepex...2mg...one hour prior to bedtime (7:30pm)

5) Clonidine...0.2mg...one hour prior to bedtime (7:30pm)

6) Diastat...10mg...as needed with seizure lasting 2 minutes or longer

As far as I am aware the nail biting is a tic. It started out with him pulling
at his eye lashes. And he did so to the point where he barely had any,
and was keeping eye infections. So I took him to the eye doctor. After
she finished her check up on him we went into the hall to talk. She gave
him a set of "glasses" that had no Rx in them and so eye drops. She told
me and him both that every time he touched his eyes we had to put these
drops in. There was no special drops they were just drops for people
with hay fever to help coat and moisturize the eyes. So we did what she
said....after about 4 days he stoped. Two days later it switched to biting
the nails...and other has worked. His neurologist said they could put him
on another med to help with anixity, but I just hate feeling like my kid is a
walking pharmacy. I mean at what point does to much meds become to
much. I just feel so confussed and lost.

I am not sure how to explain the sounds he makes...sometimes it is like a
humming or clicking sound. He seems to do the clicking sound more,
but does not seem to be aware that he is doing it until I tell him to stop.
Only to have him start a few minutes later. But they are all just weird
noises with no reasoning with them. He makes them all the time.

Thanks again for your input and letting me know I am not crazy and the
only one who feels this way! The noises may not be a tic.  They may a form of stimming.  It is a comfort thing.  Just like some kids are head bangers or rockers, some make noises. Talk to his neuro. You don't say what meds Dylan is on. Some can cause strange behaviors for sure--so always research all the possible side effects.

Secondly "weird noises" sounds like Tourette's. Have him checked if the med side effects don't cause it.

50%+ of the population of children bite their nails at some point or other. Most will outgrow it. 12% of adults bite their nails. So it's just not as weird as it looks.

Of course he drives you nutz. That's his profession as a kid

Hi and welcome. First you're not a bad mother, all kids get on their parents nerves, raising children with "issues" is even more challenging. We're allowed to be frustrated .

Does your son take any medication? I am also wondering if the noises could be a tic? What kind of noises? The nail biting sounds like it could be anxiety driven, compulsive behavior like that can be exacerbated by an increase in anxiety. Also could be drug related. Many ADHD meds can increase anxiety.

Will bites his nails, picks at his skin and makes these gosh awful mouth noises that drive me insane...He only started doing this stuff, when he was put on stimulants.. The noises drive me bonkers but the thing I cannot stand is the picking of the skin.. He ALWAYS has several marks on his body and he just picks and pokes all day long.. I have started putting neosporin on them and maybe it's helped some.

He had his pictures made last week and told him 1000 times days before, PLEASE do not touch your skin!! I want to SEE your face, not your boo boos..

I think your son just has tics too.  Maybe your dr can change the Adderall to something else that may not cause this..
