Hello everyone My name is Janice Im new here and kinda at the end of my rope lol... so to speak .. anyway my son Shane is 8 years old and in the second grade every since last year I have been getting notes home from the teacher about him disrupting the class and getting out of his seat to go talk to friends , Not listening to the teacher or following directions

Now this year started off fine, I thought to myself wow hes doing good this year!!!

Ha!! yesterday I get a note home from his teacher that shes concerned about him that hes not paying att: , and doing the work so fast that he dont get it right and is making alot of mistakes ... and that his other teachers in gym and libary feel the same ...

now I took my son last year to the doctor to see if he had adhd ... (because yes at times he dont listen) so I thought maybe he has it and the teachers arent just  wanting lil robots in their classes.... so we go to the doc last year and he says hes just a lil boy he dont have adhd .... I told the dr. that I didnt want to put my son on any medicine but I would concider herbal meds... so my questions is has any of you ever tried Focus and Brightspark? IF so please let me know how these worked out or didnt work

thanks so much for listening to me ramble on im just trying to keep sane and help my lil boy :)

God bless all of you and your Children

I have been told that fish oil is really good as a natural remedy. I have never tried it, but maybe someone else here has?shanesmommie - there are Omega-3 capsules that are small or chewable and made for children. That is what I give my kids and they like them.  Yes these are very popular on the Alternatives board. Run a search there.omegabrite comes in liquid flavored liquid form also. I recently ordered for my younger daughter (no ADHD......at least no diagnosed ADHD)

Coromega makes a VERY good Omega supplement that is almost a liquid. It has the consitency of pudding and is orange flavored. The only probelms is you would need to use it 2-3 times a day to get the target dose of DHA/EPA.

You might look at the new ADHD Parents Medication Guide prepared by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and American Psychiatric Association http://www.parentsmedguide.org/pmg_adhd.html , It discussed alternative and herbal treatments. I have seen some promising reports out of Australia on Omega3 fish oil. Not enough to say it is validated but more than enough to generate more studies. Might be worth looking into.

I am not aware of any alternative method of treatment except for the ones listed in the med guide being scientifically shown to be valid. This does not mean that others do not work on some kids for experience shows they sometimes do; what it generally shows that there is not enough evidence to suggest any of these except on a "might try it, it probably can't hurt, it's your money basis".

Keep in mind that if the herbal methods were very effective then they would be the treatment of choice. They are not. Also keep in mind that some children do respond well to these so it does not hurt to look into it.

This is  disorder for which there are no easy answers. A lot of hard work seems to be most common trait in dealing with it.

Keep plugging....it is worth it in the long run.

Mental issues are a result of physical, tangible bodily functions.  ADHD is a result of chemical imbalances and misfiring of receptors.  It is as physical as the hormone insulin being unbalanced in the body causing blood sugar issues.  You would never think to refuse diabetic medication for a child - why are so many people so afraid of ADHD medication???  I cry for my childhood, my early wasted adult years and the state of my life when I think of how different a life I could have had today had my parents medicated me as a youngster.

Don't rob your child of a chance to have a clear head. IF you don't have ADHD you don't realize how noisy the mind can be and how utterly overwhelming just living in the world can be.  You should be doing everything you can to help them.

Just my view... good luck.
