Adderall was a COMPLETE nightmare for us when it wore off. And all the doctor ever wanted to do was tack on extra Adderall in the evening....Which of course would keep him up all night. We finally gave up on the Adderall and switched to Daytrana, which I have to say was an excellent med. The only reason we went off of it was because it was affecting my sons anxiety, but otherwise I thought the Daytrana patch rocked!
I could put it on before he woke up, didn't have to think about meds all day long. And most important...It lasted as long as it was supposed to. That was another problem with the Adderall was that he just burned right through it. Even the XR didn't last him as long as it should hence the added pills in the evening.
I feel for you. I really do. My son was often times WORSE after the Adderall than he was to begin with. I suggest you try something different. There are so many medications out there that if something isn't working like it should, you can move on. Don't waste any time. You can always go back, but if you don't go forward then you don't know what is out there. And the next thing you try might be just the trick.
Vyvanse is basically Adderall in a different release form.
I think I read this somewhere. If that is true, why would he want to try that next? I'm so confused over this stuff. I thought Vyvanse was a non-stimulant but adderal is a stimulant. How can Vyvanse be a non stimulant, I keep reading that also?
I want to try Concerta, but daughter had a bad reaction to Ritalin, and Concerta is a longer acting Ritalin right? Is it possible for someone to not have a good reaction on Ritalin but a good reaction on Concerta?
Since dd had a bad reaction to Ritalin and Adderall, what would be the next common?
Thanks for all the help. I definitely won't give my dd the next dose in the morning. I'll call her doctor in the morning and see what he thinks.
This is so hard... My gut and heart hurt all the time.
I was thinking the same thing. The doctor said if we don't like this med, he wants to try Vyvanse next. Is it normal to have to try 3 different medicines before finding the right one?
My dd was diagnosed with only ADHD so far. It is strange the way the first two medicines seem to bother her sensatory system. She never complained of her clothes before, this is new.

My son had the exact same experience with adderall. He was 6 almost 7 and we had just started meds.
Adderall was no the one for him. Doctor witnessed it, and stopped med immediately.
We started a new medication the next day. It has never happened since.
I would NOT give her the med tomorrow. Call her prescribing doctor in the moring, unless they are there on Sunday's. Doctor needs to know this and to prescribe another med.
Concerta works best for DS. We got through the sleep/eating issues. He no longer has either.
I know exactly how you are feeling and what you are going through. It is very scary to watch and be able to do nothing! It even blew his pediatrician away!
Aftert this, pediatrician found a psychopharmacologist for us!!
Very best regards

AMom2Two39369.3755671296SOunds like you need a new med ASAP, and a visit with the Psych. What is her diagnosis? I agree it sounds like this is not the med for you. I would talk with the phsychiartist if she has one.It was definitely the Adderall that was making her angry and aggressive. She is not normally that way.
We started her on the Vyvanse and OMG what a difference. No rebound, no noticeable effects when it enters her system. She was just calm and smooth all day long. It was as if my loving child was back, without the hypreactivity. She could also concentrate and cleaned her room. She never cleaned her room, it was always a battle but on this medicine, she started organizing it herself and kept it very clearn all day.
I am very impressed with this medicine!!!!
Has anyone experienced rebound when your child is coming down from their meds?
My dd (age 6, first grade) is on her second med, Adderall. It's only been a week and they just increased the dosage from 5 mg a day to 10 mg. We take it two times, 4 hours apart. The increase in dosage has taken the irrability away from her, but when she comes down, she turns into a demon child. It is so awful. She is so out of control, shouting mean things, saying she is going to have someone KILL me, screaming, hitting, getting angry over everything, TOTALLY UNCONTROLABLE! It lasts for over an hour too almost 2 hours. Last night the doctor said we can try a 3rd dose, just half of the 5 mg pill to help with the rebound. We tried it last night, and while it worked some, it just delayed her coming off until way after bed hour. She couldn't fall asleep, melatona doesn't work with the adderall, she wakes up in the middle of the night screaming and kicking, it doesn't help her sleep eihter. It is so awful. She didn't have this problem on Ritalin however on Ritalin, she said her chair in school had wheels and when she tried to pick up her pencil to draw, she couldn't get her hand to move inside the box. She also complained of sensatory issues on Ritalin, such as her uniform was bothering her, her socks were bothering her, etc.
I don't want to blow by the medicines too quickly. Will a longer acting formula help with the rebound more. Is there something else they can give with this to take the rebound away? Does anyone have any suggestions or find anything that worked for their child? I really wanted to give this adderall a chance.
forget about same "family" of meds and all that, it really is amazing how the difference in med release can affect symptom relief and side effects. Keep trying. Although Vyvanse and Adderall are the same "family" they are absorbed very differently. Same goes for the methyphedinates, all released differently. We are using Daytrana right now also and we've used most of the methyphedinates at one point or another and it is definitely different. Cant tell you I "like it", but she is different than she was on the others.
forget about same "family" of meds and all that, it really is amazing how the difference in med release can affect symptom relief and side effects. I think I want to try the Vyvanse next. It has a lot of good reveiws. I like that it is a smoother medication. I will try not to worry about it being in the same "family". This is sooo hard! The constant gnawing and worry in your stomach. I don't like how the Adderal worked on her.
Dd seem to do better on the Ritalin type medication out of both of them so far.
Worry...worry....worry....and hoping to find the right medication before we quit this journey.......
AMom2Two39370.1692476852well Vyvanse is more like Adderall than Ritalin, as they are both amphetamine as opposed to methyphedinate, but aborsption is different, so you really wont know until you try. You can always stop. Good luck.
It's all worry, but no quitting on this journey
. Hang in......................
My DS didn't have the rebounding as bad with Concerta as he did with straight Ritalin or Adderall. I think it had to do with being a slower release. The type of release, even of the same drug, seems to make a big difference. I'm not an expert on this by any means, but I have seen very big differences in my son depending on the release form of methylphenidate. So far, Daytrana (patch) has been the most gentle rebound because we can take it off late in the day when he seems to be coming off of it anyway. He also has had crazy rebounds, before I understood what that was. I just thought that he was getting back to his normal personality, which is really sad, in retrospect. Now I keep him medicated as much of the day as possible while still allowing him to sleep.Vyvanse is the newest stimulant available for ADHD. It is marketed by Shire, makers of Adderall.
Concerta is the same med as Ritalin, Methylphenidate, but in a different release form.
You might consider Strattera, it is a non stimulant, but does take time to work, 4-6 weeks, and has to be ramped slowly.
