Abilify for 6 year old | ADHD Information

Is it 2.5 mgs? Abilify's smallest dose is 5 mg which can be split. It is an atypical antipsychotic which is sometimes used as a 3rd line med for ADHD. DD's previous psych wanted her to try it, but after reading the side effects I disagreed, and found a new psych. The main side effect is Weight gain, and that was the last thing DD needed.

Have you tried Straterra?

Has anyone tried Abilify for their child? My doctor wants my 6 year old son
on .25mg at night. This is a very low dose and she believes higher than that
has negative impact. I am wondering if anyone uses it and what is the age/
weight/ and what dosage.

BTW: We have tried stimulant (Metadate CD and Concerta), Zoloft, and
Tenex. None have worked.

Any feedback is appreciated.

That is a very small dosage. As an adult, I take 30 mgs of Abilify and have for quite sometime. It works very well for me. I have both Bipolar Disorder and ADHD. It has a positive and negative side effect:  Hyperness or Sleepiness. This is something to watch out for, and it will help determine when the doctor and you will figure out when to administer the medication. For a while, I had to take the medication 3 times a day. Now I just take all 30 mgs at nighttime and it knocks me out right to sleep.

Remember that each medication effects every person differently. Give each medication a try. We have gone through many with my son and myself til we have found the right mix.

Hang in there. I know it is not easy on both ends of the spectrum.

My son was on 5mg of Abilify a few years ago.  He was 8 & 9 at the time and weighed inbetween 50-60lbs, very small.  It worked for awhile.  It made him very sleepy so he did take it at night.  We gradually started noticing more irritability in the late evening and especially in the morning before he took any other meds. Not irritability that you can live with but tantrums and explosiveness.  He has since been taken off of it and placed on .5mg of Risperdal.  That so far seems to be workinig.
