new to adderall xr | ADHD Information

My son is 8yrs old and just started taking adderall xr 10mg.  Everything seems to be going very well.  BUT when he gets home from school it seems to be wearing off.  Is there anything that can be done for those few hours.  It's not horrible but I'm affraid it might get to that point especially if he has lots of homework.I'm not a doctor, so please don't take my comment seriously. However, earlier this year we had the same problem with Adderall XR. Our son's doctor switched him to straight Adderall, not the "timed release" type, which Adderall XR is. Our son then took 2 pills each day, one in the morning and one when he came home from school. That worked better than the timed release version.

However IMO, it's too early to decide. If you say he "just started" Adderall XR, I think you need to give it more time to find out if it's the drug, or a different issue. For now take notes, write in a diary about his behavioral changes. Your doctor will want to know at your next visit so he can decide if Adderall XR is the right type of stimulant and the right dosage.

Hope this helps...

If the meds are wearing off and your son experiences (as most of us do) some "rebound" as this wearing off occurs, I can see where that could make settling down to do homework very problematic (pure torture if you ask me)!!  I found that I felt the negative effects of this rebound were worst when I first started taking Adderall.  So, as advised already, it'll be good to check in with your son and keep notes, and share any issues with the doc.

Our 6 y/o only took Adderall XR for two or three days before we had to pull him off.  He was very focused (and jacked up) while on it but did not have too many behavior issues.  However, when it began to wear off, he had meltdowns much worse than what whe expereinced when not on Adderall.

We have since moved to Straterra and are VERY happy with the results.
