Bravo sammi33!! You should be very proud of yourself today, and your doctor is awesome!!

You both did an great job advocating for your son and standing up to those "bullies".  I could cry over your post, I am so happy. What they were doing to your son was abusive. They should be ashamed of themselves!!

Way to go!!

Keep us posted!!

I am so glad you brought the doctor. Sad, how quickly they respond when they see we mean business! Congrats, it's a huge step in the right direction .Your doctor is awesome and Metis you always make me smile. How is it you hit the perverbial nail in the head everytime? Be happy for your accomplishments fro you have done well.

Sammi

I am so glad the doctor was there to support you both. The meeting would have been quite different with he/her. I have the feeling everything would have been all your fault.

Is there another school that he can attend in your area? They really don't want to do what they are supposed to do and somehow you get to be the bad guy by making them do their job correctly.

My doctor has motor tics and she said she can stop them sometimes but it really takes a toll on her (very exhausting).

hi everyone

I had the meeting at Liams' school yesterday and took his Psychiatrist with me, she was great

They were so contradictory, one minute they were saying he was great in class that you didn't know you had him, the next they were saying he was loud, didn't listen to instructions and distracted others, then they were saying he was well below average and then they were say his spellings, reading and maths were fantastic and average in the class, they didn't have a clue of what to say!

They kept trying to blame his tics on his ADHD meds until the DR told them point blank that Liam has been diagnosed with TOURETTES and yes certain meds can make the tics worse but that under no circumstances was he to be told to stop doing his tics (LSA!)

The teacher complained that Liam was talking excessively in class (this is the teacher who informed me she has an MA in SEN, previous post) She was then told by DR that this was due to his ADHD and that his meds need some adjusting so he can't help this at the moment.

It also turns out that his STATEMENT still hasn't got a diagnosis on it (even though the school receive all the same letters as I do !)  The DR then told them how bad the communication at the school was and that if his STATEMENT hasn't got the correct information on it then how can they possibly be giving him the right level of support and be using the correct strategies in the classroom!

I then mentioned all the negative comments in his contact book and the fact that last year even if he read for a while, sat down for a while or listened to any instructions he received a sticker in his book and the SENCO told me he was too old for stickers!!!!HELLO he needs positivity and if this means letting him have a sticker in his book at the age of 13 let alone him being only 8 to boost his self esteem and get him working in class, give him a STICKER

The Dr asked how many hours LSA support liam received which is 20 a week, when asked if this could be increased the HEAD laughed (how sarcastic!) and said he wouldn't get anymore then that as he is not the only child in the school that needs support. So I said that I understand that other chidren need support and I feel for them but my main concern is my son who is not coping at this school.

The Dr is going to contact the local authorities about increasing these hours for him

It is just a case of waiting to see if they sort themselves out now and change their attitudes towards Liam and give him what he needs.

Be in touch with an update soon, thank you for all your support

Way to go doc!! That's awesome!

I would like you to check out a website called www.wrightslaw.com, it may help you with how you need to handle the school.  I am going through something similar and I have a child advocate who is assisting me.  Be the thorn in their side and the squeaky wheel, it is worth the fight.I'm furious.

What a bunch of clowns running that school and dealing with your son.

Any note that says they "know all about it" shows their unalterable ignorance, unwillingness to learn and arrogance.

If there's any way--get this kid the h*ll out of there as fast as you can.

I would call a TEAM meeting before March. Bring the psychiatrist. This needs to be discussed. whether he is properly placed or not, the comments about tics and telling him it is not his ADHD or not his Tourettes is out of line. You need to discuss how to move forward and what things can be done if he is not succeeding in school with the current accomodations.

I'm so sorry this is happening to your son.  I am dealing with a similar issue with my DS and his teacher so I know how angry, frustrated and sad this can make your son and you.  Is it possible for you to home school or find another school?

Good luck!

Hi, Please can someone give me some advice, my son is 8 and has ADHD/TOURETTES/AUTISM

He was taking RITALIN up until a month ago, he lost too much weight on this and his behaviour was getting increasingly worse.

He is now on 10mg of Equasym in the mornings to help him in the school day and then 25mg of STRATTERA in the evenings.

My problem is the school, last year he was getting on really great he had 22 hours one to one LSA support, reward stickers for anytime he was trying hard with reading, writing, sitting still at carpet time, listening to instructions etc.

Now that he is in his fourth year they have decided to take away his one to one support as they feel 'he needs to live in the real world' he is now getting behind with his work, disrupting the class and slowly losing his confidence. He has not had any reward stickers and all that he is getting in his contact book that he brings home for me to sign is bad reports, e.g:

"Liam you must not talk during tests!"

"Don't forget to listen to the whole of the instructions from the teacher before you start work"!

"Do not blame other people for things that you have done!"

"stop talking its not your ADHD"!

"stop pulling those silly faces its not your TOURETTES"!

"that writing is disgusting do it again"!

Is it me or are they just being so negative towards him, when told to stop pulling silly faces it just makes his tics ten times worse!

ADHD children have such low self esteem as it is, he cries everyday saying he hates school.

If he cries for me at school they say to him "if you cry again i will send you to the headteacher!!

I am at a loss at what to do, i even sent in some information i printed off the net about ADHD this week and this is the reply i got from the class teacher:

I ACKNOWLEDGE RECEIPT OF SHEETS-THANKYOU. I FELT THEY WERE A TAD REDUNDANT AS WE HAVE ALL BEEN TRAINED- I HAVE AN MA IN SEN. BUT THANKYOU-ALL KNOWLEDGE IS USEFUL.

If this is the case then why the hell are they treating my son like this!!!!!!!!!

Please someone give me advise asap before i really lose the plot!

My GOD...your post has me in tears!  How dare this teacher talk to your son that way!  I would file a complaint on that teacher before I did anything.  That behavior is just UNACCEPTABLE.  And trust me...in the states...that teacher would be UNEMPLOYED.  Rightfully so!

Wow, I cannot believe how badly they are treating your son.  This would be illegal in the US.  It's emotional abuse.  You need to remove him from that painful environment ASAP.  If it were my son, I would take him out of the school tomorrow, and I am a full believer in educating my children in a "real world" environment, but making them cry on a daily basis?  That's completely unacceptable.  If you have the option of another school with a more caring staff, go for it.  I am not a big fan of homeschooling, but in your case even that looks appealing (provided you are allowed to homeschool in the UK).

Let us know how this turns out.  I am worried about your little guy, too.

Hi, thanks for replying

, I have looked into it yes, there is a really good special needs school local to us, the facilities are great, I don't know which way to go with this to be honest, i have to consider it i know, even his phyciatrist has gone mad and is arranging a meeting with the school this month, this is the type of school to make things very difficult for you if you dissagree with anything.

His next IEP meet isn't until march 2008.

Here in the states if the public school can NOT accommadate the child to educate him/her with their needs, then THEY pay for the fabulous private school that can give your child the very best education and life start with all their fabulous services. Maybe the other school tht you already checked out is the better place!

your son needs better help than he is getting. The school also doesn't want to assume the responsibility of caring for your son where he needs the appropriate services.

Find the right place for your son and go after the current school to pay for it!!

Poor little guy!!

sammi3339372.9641898148I suspect they are treating him like this because they want him transferred to alternate education -- probably a special day class. Have you checked into the special day classes in your county? When is your next IEP meeting?

what the hell does the school think they are doing, My daughter is in year 5, and has trouttes and tic's , adhd and on the autism sepctrum, if is under the child delevopment unit contact them and make a appointment to see a member of the paediaric team, also try and get a proffession review set up at the school which should be the LSA, teacher headmaster and the doctors , then hopefully you will be able to get some hour's for him,

The teacher sound's a bit strange, what does the headmaster say in all this,

i agree with metisrebel if you don't get the answers  soon get the hell out of there. My daughter goes to a mixed school with some from mild disablities with also sereve,

I don't know what area you are but have you heard of the LEARNING DISABILIT TEAM, WHO THEY MAIN AIM IS TO HELP  AND GIVE YOU SUPPORT.

let me know how you are doing , when you go for the school review DON'T go on your own.Best of luck

margaret

Why not just send a letter to the head teacher, providing the quotes, state that you son comes home every day crying and says he hates school, and you would like to schedule a meeting with the teacher and head teacher to discuss the teacher's behavior.

Sammi33

I hope your week off helps. Your post makes me so angry. No child should have to suffer such abuse. My mother went through  a similar situation in the 60's when my little brother was diagnosed and it was the trained educators that gave us so much grief.

My advice is document everything and makes sure you take an advocate with you when you meet with the school. Does any of your local books stores have books on the laws for the education of children with disablities? Pick of of those up, they can be very dry reading.

I will keep you my prayers.

My first question would be "what is the real world?" because his world and their worlds are entirely different. Would they ask a kid with no legs to get out of his wheelchair and WALK? He has autism for G's sake. I used to volunteer with autistic kids and they need special attention to flourish *sigh* Would they ask a schizophrenic kid "Hey stop talking to your invisible friend?" Cripes, the world is fulla idjits.

He has not had any reward stickers and all that he is getting in his contact book that he brings home for me to sign is bad reports, e.g:

If you can, get this kid out of there. NOW.  He can live with less education, he can't live with the constant criticism.

I tell ya--some of these schools make my blood boil

Sometimes I can't even read parent posts because I can feel the pain

Hi, The week off school hasn't been great, lots of tears and agressive behaviour due to the stress of going back to school today.

Liam was so tearful going into school today he was in near hysterics, I saw the teacher and arranged a meeting for after school tonight.

Have just had a phone call from the school to pick him up as he has been complaining about stomach pains, he is fine and all cheerful now that he is at home so will have to rebook for tomorrow.

Thank you again for your continued support, will keep you posted of any progress xx

I am so sorry to hear this! How upsetting for your son and for you. WE are our children's advocates, I learned that early on. My reply to her 'all knowing' would be "IF you know, then why are you acting so uninformed? Once you're willing to acknowledge my son's struggles I will feel free to stop educating you."

Fight for your son, you're the only one who is going to do it and HE deserves the best education you can get him.  But get your posse together and go in a meeting with reinforcement. Fight for your son!

Thank you so much to everyone who has replies to my post.

It is great to have so much support out there.

My son has a week off school at the moment for half-term, so we are spending this week gathering strength, I will certainly be quoting from all of you, your advice has been great!

I will let you know the outcome as soon as possible

Thanks again

Hi, everthing is going great!!!!!!

Since the meeting the school they are bending over backwards to help liam.

It certainly shoudn't haven taken this to acheive what he should have already been getting, but, we are all so pleased.

No more tears before school, lots of great comments in his home contact book, his tics have calmed right down and he is less aggressive at home, he is so much happier

Thank you for all your support when we were going through such a tough time

this is great news Sammi, it is really is too bad so much work has to go in to getting schools to support these kids, but done right everyone can work together so our children can be successful. That's great to hear! Hope it continues now. Such hard work for something that should have been done anyway. It is worth it though I know. [QUOTE=spamula]Your doctor is awesome and Metis you always make me smile. I think it's BECAUSE I have ADHD.
