girls with ADD | ADHD Information

I was never diagnosed but was the least effected of the three kids. My two brothers were ADD and ADHD with learning disabilities.  Actually, my little brother was ADHHHHHHHHHHHHHD, so I looked normal compared to him. I often wonder how my mother survived us. I just always thought everyone was like me and never understood why people looked at me funny when I made comments about not sleeping or starting projects at 10:00 pm.

At my son's last appointment his doctor looked at me and asked if I had ever diagnosed as ADHD. I had to admit I knew it but had never been treated. I had to laugh as I asked him if it was that obvious, he just smiled. After we get my son stable, I am next on the list.

Good luck to you Capital Woman.  I'm a newbie too with a 7 year old dd just diagnosed.  SHe's more of an inattentive type, with some fidgety/impulse control issues.  I don't medicate as yet, but am trying to see if Omega 3 therapy can help.  We have a tutor once a week and fortunately her school is very advanced in dealing with special needs kids in mainstream settings.  I've just started reading a book called "Understanding GIlrls with Ad/Hd by Kathleen Nadeau.  It might be a good place for you to start too.  ALso, "smart kids with school problems" by P. Vail is helping me figure out the 16 page neuropsych evaluation I got on her.  Over the years I've read Hallowell & Mel Levine books and Sarl Solden has done a lot of writing on women and AdHd.  As you can see--my way of dealing with issues is to research, research, research.  Which explains why I'm here.

AdHd tends to get diagnosed early in kids on the hyper end of the spectrum.  Those dreamy inattentive types take longer to figure out unfortunately.  I'm just happy we know what were dealing with now

It's all ADHD. Inattentive type is given to children who suffer from the inability to focus and stay on task, but do not have the impulsive and/or hyperactive behaviors.MIne is 10, and has ADHD /innattentive. It is sometimes harder to diagnose /recognize in girls because they often do not display the same symptoms as boys. my daughter is 13. She was originally ? ADHD at age 5, then "rediagnosed" at age 8. She is also mainly inatttenvie, although has some impulsiveness and hyperactivity in that she is quite fidgety and acts very, very silly when not on meds.I was misdiagnosed as a kid. Given the wrong meds. Given the right meds without diagnosis--the list is endless

Anyway I was the hyper kind but "girls don't have ADHD" was the prevailing belief in the 60's.

Girls tend to be socialized differently and for an ADHD kid--it's even worse. Because this society has more expectations that a girl will be relationship-driven ADHD girls tend to be isolated because they are action-driven.

The best thing that happened was my big brother forcing the neighbourhood boys to let me play street hockey. I burned up a lot of hyperness playing from morning until night and whenever school was out. I began to sleep at night, too--thus not driving my mom as crazy bouncing around at 4am.

I learned to build up relationship skills the way boys did--through goal setting [literally] and team work. It also taught me to get smashed around without flinching, whining or crying about it. This has been helpful in life, too.

If you can find what interests motivate this particular child--that's the most important aspect. Through the pursuit of those interests comes some inner fortitude and the ability to understand how to reach goals.

My daughter is not that hyper, what is inattentive ADD? < =text/>_popupControl(); I have one that is 14 and inattentive. She has been on Concerta for 3 years- she was diagnosed after my 9 yr old was diagnosed with combined type. The older DD has never been a behavior problem and makes good grades. She was very good at compensating so no one knew she had it.

Both of mine are girls. One is inattentive and one is combined (like me).
