Isnt this the Coaching Arena? | ADHD Information
Heya gang:
Can we consider, the motley group we are--reallio trullio COACHING one another?
If we could put together a bit of a plan, maybe a round robin sort of thing,***we could coach each other. For those who can't get access to pro coaches this might be helpful.
Some ideas:
***Round Robin Example: Fred coaches Sally in pm once a week. Sally coaches Mary. Mary coaches John. John coaches Fred. Sharing--everyone gives and gets. Maybe non-adhd parents could coach parents too
One of the struggles with posting here is a million great ideas from everyone but in the coaching sense--it's overload for an ADHD'er sometimes.
Any more ideas? I think this is very, very important because it will give us all a sense of control in our own worlds, on our own time.
If anybody is willing to give it a go--I could post a working outline on how mentoring is done in agencies and then we could all go over it and re-work it to suit our needs.
Anybody up for it?

Yes, i wan tto try. i am excited by the idea but saddened by my add

hx: things i tell a group i think are good, they nearly never do...lol.

You don't have to be sad about ADHD--in fact, most of us are pretty excitable

What ya gotta do is figure out how to WORK with it--not against it. You'd be amazed at what you can do

It's also about learning henry. If we set up a process and instructions for coaching--you'll do just fine

And you'll get coached back.
LET'S GET SOME COMMITTED [pardon the pun] folks on here. We CAN do it! If we get 6 or more names, I'll see if I can come up with a sorta coaching booklet for us to try based on the techniques that are out there..and y'all add input/ideas/techniques and we can even be our own research project on the best techniques for adults [which we can then post!]
THE LIST--quote and add name pls if you wanna try...

Nobody has the right to speak to you like this for any reason. The simplest solution is to draw yourself up, look 'em straight in the eye and say, "I beg your PARDON??!! Would you like to repeat that please?" if you heard the comment.
If you did not overhear it--then look at the other employee sweetly and say, "Is there some overwhelming reason you felt the need to tell me this?"

Here's what I've come up with.
COACH JOB:
When we are in our role as "coach" it's about our coachee--not our tasks. When we are being coached then it's our role to let the coach support US. Try to keep the roles straight. That's why you will be coaching ONE person, but being coached by another. We ADHD'ers confuse easily--let's try and keep to one role at a time
You are not doing social work. Remember this [as some of us are in the field]. You are more accurately, mentoring. Remember that ADHD'ers can get off on tangents and we want to prevent that. It's our job to keep them on the playing field even if they'd rather play NintendoKeep your messaging in pm to the point. I know it's nice to talk about dog shampoos but our new round-robin we're checking out is as much about us learning to coach responsibly as ADHD'ers as it is about us learning to get the things done, we want to get done as the coachees. In the beginning I'll put up a instructions to try to follow.
Right now we will keep it very simple. At the end of the week I will tell WHY we did that exercise based on sound psychological principles I've discovered motivating very difficult people. You only have to suspend disbelief for one week that I might be right. Every week we can discuss whether it worked or not, or what might have worked better, publicly
The ultimate goal [if we don't get off track] is to create a methodology that WORKS. So we may have a few spills along the way. Unlike agencies that have to 'misinterpret' the data to get funding--we are FREE to experiment because the only thing we care about is whether it works for US or not--isn't that liberating?

In the beginning we will round-robin [from our list] that way, if anything blows apart as happens in the lives of ADHD'ers we can still continue. Every week put your name BACK on the list if you are planning to continue so we can set up the next week's list.
Okay if one role is 'coaches' what do we call the other role? Any ideas?
Remember--ADHD'ers have GREAT minds--let's use ours for ourselves for a while!

to develop my strenghts and only give time to my weakness areas enough to get

That's why I'm designing our "handbook" from our posts I just cut and paste them into a doc then I'll edit as we learn

I've spent a long time pondering this so we all succeed together

Plus, if anything doesn't work--we can all be honest and SAY it because its FOR us--not for some agency somewhere or whatever.
Take out the profit margins and paycheques and voila! we are liberated to learn for ourselves the way WE learn! Obviously we all love our computers--good motivator to start with

This week I'll post our round Robin and next Sunday November 25. I'll post the first exercise. If newbies join after that--they start at exercise one. I'm keeping the exercises so if you're coaching I can resend them to you

On Monday November 26th, team rev your engines!!!!!

Yes you have to read quite a bit because EVERYONE is coached while they coach someone else.
So you have to be able to read the coaching instructions as well as your exercise [exercise 1] and your coachee's exercise...so you can help them and they can help you I'm sure you're assigned coach for the week will be willing to email you all the pertinent instructions.
I'm sure your coach will be willing to write you in blue should it help

COOL PROGRAM:
I found this cool little program FREE from a scifi writer and computer programmer who I've got programs from before. There's never any spy/malware in his stuff.
It sits in your computer's system tray and can be networked to all your computers [work and home]
What I like about it is that it will continue to nag me on "sleep" mode to do a job. And you can change the wav file alarm to anything you want. { mine sings, "i feel good!" by james brown

}
It takes a bit of getting used to but I'm having success with it so you might want to try it out.
Anyway, for those of you with time struggles you might want to check it out...

ADHD Adventure #1
[Monday
November 26 –Sunday December 1st… 7 day exercise]
Choosing your first adventure….
Do not choose a negative such as ‘I want to stop
fidgeting’. Pick a positive—what do you want to accomplish? What simple task could improve the quality of your
life if you did it every day?
For now, we are not dealing with parenting
struggles—we will specify coaches with expertise and experience for those
struggles, later.
Do not do something that someone else
expects such as cleaning the bathroom because it bugs your spouse. Choose
something for yourself.
Cut and paste the following list
into a pm to your coach.
Just
replace what’s there and write your own list. Follow the instructions. Your
coach will let you know if you’ve done the exercise correctly. If any coaches
are in doubt then either post or pm me K?
1. Choose a task that at some point
in your life you used to do every
day but lately have not. This can be as simple as combing your hair
every day or mopping the kitchen floor. Eg:
Buy milk
2. Break your daily task down into mini
tasks: EG:
1st.
Get dressed [you aren’t going out in our pajamas, are you?]
2nd.
Brush teeth
3rd.
Have shower
4th.
Put on shoes
5th.
Find the money
6th.
Walk to milk store
7th.
Buy the milk
8th.
Walk home [some days, remembering where you live is an accomplishment in itself]
9th.
Pm your coach at the end of the day whether you did your full task or
not. Check off how far you DID get on your mini task list. Every day.
Point of exercise:
·
Even simple tasks are the result many actions.
·
Learning to break this down will help with other, more complex tasks
and deadlines later.
·
We’re working towards
a brighter future. [or at least encouraging the mice to find new homes] including how to plan concrete tasks
towards a goal.
*************************************
COACHES:
1)
Keep track if the task is accomplished.
2)
If the person does MORE that’s great but if they haven’t pm’ed by the
following day—ASK if they did it. [thus the rewards column!]
3)
It is at your discretion if you consider the task completed based on
THEIR list of the breakdown. Was the most important
part completed? You might even want to ask them if your coachee considers the task
pretty much completed.
4) Remember that
the goal is not perfection even if
your coachee doesn’t see imperfection as success. The goal is task
maintenance and motivation.
If your
coachee accomplished their task, here is what you send:
Day 1:
one Smiley
Day 2:
two Smilies
Day 3:
three smilies
Day 4:
three smilies and a clapper
Day 5:
three smilies and two clappers
Day 6:
three smilies and three clappers
Day 7: a
star
Here’s a
table you can cut and paste back and forth [ctrl C then CTRL V] in your
emails and what it would like if they did the task every day.
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Saturday
Sunday

Do not
get lost in WHY the person did not complete. It’s irrelevant. They have lots
of other exercises later to work out barriers. Your job is to encourage them
to get back on the playing field ASAP—not to create a perfect play.
After
any three smilies comes a clapper. After 4 smilies comes 2 clappers etc.
If they
did the task 4 times or more that week IT IS A SUCCESS. MOTIVATE! MOTIVATE!
MOTIVATE!!!!
Your job
as a coach is to motivate working towards
the goal. Success is good but you can’t always coach a winning game. What you
can coach is players who play their
best game and support them to try harder next time so they can eventually win a game.
If you
have any general coaching questions, not
pertaining to your coachee—POST. Someone else may need the same answer. If
you have a question about how to assist your particular coachee—pm me.
At the
end of the week all coaches send me
your adher’s results in smilies/clappers/stars.
We will post our
results without names unless we all
agree to put up the full table
Next Sunday—let me
know how you all viewed the experience and what went well and what we could
improve.
LET’S SEE HOW MANY SMILIES CLAPPERS AND STARS WE CAN GET TOGETHER —
GO TEAM GO!!!

I think she is saying that ANNIE, LULU and DIGI DIGI are all her. She deleted Lulu and DigiDigi from the list and just left Annie.
So Lulu needs to be taken off the list and Roundtable schedule....

EVERYONE PM THE PERSON YOU ARE COACHING PLEASE!!! then please send a 'hello' back to your coach.
This ensures that everyone knows how to reach each other and that all systems are "go"
Could everyone make sure either their pms or their buddy lists are OPEN to the list? That way it's easier to keep track...
Thanks!

[/QUOTE]
i checked out my pm.
my coach will pm me under my user name which is digi digi (important:: there is a space between digi and digi)
i put everyone on my buddy list including myself. i then successfully pm'd digi digi, so i know for a fact that digi digi is the ticket, my ticket.
i will remain annie on our list.
i hope this is clear. i get myself into situations such as this quite often in my life. then quite a few people, especially those at work, get fed up and not care to understand me.
thanks for your patience.
i pm'd MetisRebel and katastophee.
i am coaching these two, right?
i just want to be sure.
i am ready.

Does one have to read all that to join?
There's enough there for two or ten to read.
I learn in short, blue, centered spurts.

If you want to try--You can get on the list--just add your name to the latest list for next week.
Yes you have to read quite a bit because EVERYONE is coached while they coach someone else.
So you have to be able to read the coaching instructions as well as your exercise [exercise 1] and your coachee's exercise...so you can help them and they can help you
I'm sure you're assigned coach for the week will be willing to email you all the pertinent instructions.
I'm sure your coach will be willing to write you in blue should it help
[/QUOTE]
Blue helps, yes!
But, I'll wait for now.
I don't think I can read all that.
Thanks,
D
david. i am doing the regular thing. we are in our first week -- things will evolve.
i offer to coach you in a free form style not requiring that reading. write or call if you wish to start n c how it goes. this is not part of the round robin.

I could. We could be TEAM "A" and there could be a "team B". There has to be enough people for a team though.
And yes, David has an excellent point which is why I offered to break it down for him because he didn't have all last week to email or get one msg at a time like our "first team" did so it must look terribly overwhelming.
I'm wondering if we're okay with re-grouping only every six weeks at this point? Because the work load's a bit overwhelming if I have to go back to square one with people each time someone joins...
I actually did a whole psych building/step ladder for six weeks for maximum gain
It's less work if we are team A--the next 6 folks team B--that sort of thing.
MetisRebel39415.6602314815
Tell ya what,
I'll read it somehow,
and get back to you.
In the meantime, don't let me interrupt what you have going.
Put me on a B team when it starts.
Its not like I'm in a crisis after all these years.
I've learned to cope & compensate enough to survive.
Or, if you can summarize, or link me the summary statement...

Hi MetisRebel,
I had a couple of reasons, one coach shut down for vacation for about 6 weeks. That one was working on an overall approach to organizing home and work. The other I hired because of a job crisis at work. It was great help - I walked out of my job with a great severance package as a result, and did not lose my cool during the tense weeks ahead of my final day.
[/QUOTE]
That is so excellent!
Too often we don't cope well with change or we know we must make a decision that's right but we don't have the skill on how to do it in our own best interest. Nor the supports in place.
You are in Canuckland I see. Getting help here for Adult ADHD under OHIP right now is a horror. As far as I can tell--there are very few places dealing with presently. As funding in Ontario tends to be "flavour-of-the-month" social services--we're not the flavour right now, unfortunately for us.
In social service terms what I'm attempting here is a form of peer support group. Group-groups are difficult for adhd'ers because of the distraction factor so the work is individual with a peer coach.
I believe that people learn in groups more efficiently and that the supports built in groups can be maintained long past the group dates.
I set up an exercise for the group based on a series of levels designed to create skills that will help get tasks done. These tasks are designed in a step system leading to particular, larger goals. Each person chooses their own actual tasks. This also includes their ability improve their coaching skills. So far I have designed a 6 week "starter program" and a 4 week follow up program. Motivation and permanent self-reliance are key points.
Contrary to popular opinion, I don't believe self-reliance is singular. I believe much of it is based in peer support. I believe it's more about knowing when you're floundering, getting support and giving it to jump the hurdle.
My function is co-ordination. I too am coaching and being coached. I make sure everyone gets hooked up and has their exercises. And I am trying to track results so we can improve the methodology.
So this may be quite a different experience for you
OKAY GROUP A--To cut down confusion I started a new thread for our own exercises and round robins.

OKAY FELLOW ADVENTURERS
I HAVE MY FILES BACK YAYA!!!!
Now. Since so many got lost in the process here's what I suggest...
I suggest that we start Adventure #2 AGAIN. Those of you who did it--great, twice won't hurt you
GROUP A who did Adventure #1
Please confirm HERE:
MetisRebelOmmasAnnie [digi digi]___________________________
Now, I would really like to get the results from Group A before I get into Group B. That way we can see what worked and what didn't to improve the program for Group B.
If you folks think that we should just soldier onwards and worry about results later--let me know. I'm well aware of how little concrete help is available for some folks.
My preference however is to fine-tune as we go and group A are our beta-testing group

Group B hang onto your jockeys and we'll get ya all signed up in a few weeks. Okay? You will need 6+ in your group to do a round-robin coach.

You can get into group B, no prob.
The exercises thus far are designed to handle 6-12 people at a time.
I'd be interested to know what you got from the coach experience and why you would have 2 at a time?
Hi MetisRebel,
I had a couple of reasons, one coach shut down for vacation for about 6 weeks. That one was working on an overall approach to organizing home and work. The other I hired because of a job crisis at work. It was great help - I walked out of my job with a great severance package as a result, and did not lose my cool during the tense weeks ahead of my final day.
I've seen some new folks around asking for coaches. For TEAM B We have:
DavidornadoIF YOU WISH TO JOIN TEAM B ADD YOUR NAME HERE
It will take me at least a week to sort out my major computer hassles. Anytime after that, that there are 6 on the coach list--we can start another thread for Team B.
OKAY GANG:
I'M GOING TO POST THIS WEEK'S ADVENTURE AND ASSUME FOR THE MOMENT THAT EVERYONE ABOVE IS "IN"
IF YOU SEND YOUR TASK LIST TO YOUR COACH AND S/HE DOESN'T REPLY BY MONDAY NIGHT--I WILL SWITCH YOU AROUND

ADHD ADVENTURE #2
Sunday December 1st, 2007
Pick one task that you would like to do weekly. This time—it should be a task that you’ve generally struggled doing weekly even though you know it improve the quality of your life if you did. Again—this is about YOUR needs, not your family or friends’ expectations.
Again, break it down.
EG:
TASK: Grocery shopping
BREAKDOWN:
Look around the house, make listEat sandwich to avoid overshoppingFind a quarterFind car keysDrive to storeGet shopping cart [thus the quarter!]Get what’s on the listPut the cart back Take groceries homePut groceries awayHave nice cup of tea and eat the fresh cookies [after all, what’s the point without enjoying the groceries?] If you can, find a way to reward yourself here for doing a big task.
Now-- keep up last week’s task as much as you can.
COACHES FOR THIS WEEK’S ADVENTURE:
If your adventurer/coachee does most of their list on their new task they can have three smilies/three clappers and if the main job gets done—their star. Designate smilies, clappers and stars during the week as you see fit.Keep in mind it's the MAIN TASK that must get done. Smaller, less important tasks may be let go along the way as long as the main task is accomplished.IF your coachee/adventurer can also manage to keep up last week's task for more than 4 days ADD A STARIf they keep up last week's task for 6-7 days ADD TWO STARS.I strongly suggest, adventurers that you get computer program daytimers. It will help a great deal to have reminders for both tasks.

Let's get a B team going. We need 6 for a team in case a few drop out [a not uncommon ADHD situation

]. If not David, in 5 1/2 more weeks we WILL include you for sure and assign you a coach and coachee
Summary statement:
We rotate coaches weekly.
Everyone coaches everyone else and everyone GETS coached.
Right now, we have a series of skill building exercises
[each one builds on the last skill learned] for 6 weeks.
Everyone can get support for whatever tasks they wish to accomplish leading to
the ability to organize for themselves with a bit of support when necessary
Also, the coaches will increase their coaching skills through practise.
At that time, the group can decide what worked, what didn't and we can revamp the exercises for greater efficiency. So the B-team gets the results of the best parts of the experiment

well i do see a point to what Davidornado

Can we start new rounds in a new post thread?

Would love to but right now I can barely maneover as my O/S is now only a dvd.
Until I get this straightened out--I can barely get around this site at all

Unless we have linux wizards available on here--this IS gonna take a while but I'm trying to keep up as best I can

Hi there,
I would like to coach/be coached. I have some ideas after hiring two coaches of my own (they even overlapped for a while)
Please let me know if I have to wait for round c
HOW IS EVERYONE MANAGING?
Any questions?
OKAY GANG
I've HIT AN ICEPATCH IN THE ROAD--a big one.

My OS has to be replaced on my computer. Am looking forward to learning linux but that means also that I no longer have my speed stuff like bookmarks and everyone's name in my pm saved files etc.
I DO still the exercises etc. So we should be able to stay on target.
But I DO apologize in advance if anyone sent a msg or posted or something and I missed it.
So I'm not ignoring you or whatever [or others on the board if I miss something.]
Just give me some time, folks I'm on a learning curve.

The good news is that in a few months--when I've learned enough--a whole lot of neato doors could open up.
Welcome to the world of penguins instead of windows
