Help! Need advice on Concerta!!! | ADHD Information

Focalin is about 2x as strong as oral methylphenidates, as it is only the more active form.

Focalin xr 20mg would be like a concerta 40 if there was one. So you would be looking at 36mg concerta. At concerta.net there is lots of info.

Hi.  It's been a while since I posted.  But anyhow.  I'm looking into the Pros/Cons of Concerta as I'm thinking about discussing it with my son's doctor.  I would like to switch Jon off of Focalin xr 20mg as it doesn't work beyond 2/230/3pm unless we give it to him later in the morning - even then it runs out before I get him home.  What is the equivlant for Focalin xr 20mg in Concerta?  I know there has to be one....help!?   I've done some preliminary research and have asked my Aunt about her experience with Concerta and my cousin who has multiple learning problems, including ADHD.  She likes it because it lasts 12 hours, and numerous other things - too many to fully write up on here.   I'm hoping someone can give me any advice/additional information/suggestions/etc about Concerta.  I want as much info to be able to bring to the table while at the Doctors this evening.    Anything and everything is extremely apprecaited.  Thanks in advance if I don't get a chance to fully reply (I'm at work and have a TON of stuff to do!!).   Thanks thank thanks again!   I don't know anything about concerta but I can tell you that Daytrana lasts through homework - no problem.  We put it on at 6:30 and take it off between 4:30 and 5:00.  The only down side is that it takes a while to kick in (2 hours)

I agree Daytrana lasts the whole 12 hours.(for us smoother than Concerta too). We did get a long time out of Concerta, but my daughter just did not do well on Concerta, but a lot of people LOVE it.

From what I hear Vyvanse lasts a long time too.

Well, I'm not a kid and everyone's different, but here's my experience. I started on 18mg (for like a week) and went to 36mg of Concerta. The doctor asked if I wanted to raise it after a month but I noticed an improvement and so did he so we kept it there. No funky moods, everyone around me happy, me reasonably happy, too. Slowly I began to realize it wasn't as effective after 4pm but I held out another month. Oddly, it didn't matter how late I took it, it still began to dissipate around 4pm. We decided to try a ritalin booster later in the day. That was the epitome of counter-productive as it knocked me out.  This month I began forgetting to do things, then forgot to put the meds in that pill reminder thingy, and finally forgot to take the meds (went back home and got them, though, so I'm better than I used to be).  The doc asked if I wanted to do the Daytrana patch, and I declined as I have really sensitive skin and the Concerta's been great...just wasn't lasting. At 54mg now, it's lasting.  The right dose is key, but I suppose metabolism and severity of the problem also factor in. Plus everyone seems to have a different reaction, so what works for one, doesn't for another. In my case, though, Concerta's been fantastic and hopefully it stays that way. My son is 10 1/2. He has been on concerta since he was 7. He tried adderall xr but it was horrible for him, terrible rebound and made him aggitated while it was "working".

We also have our son on guanfacine/tenex. It helps our ADHD'ers overstimulation and anxiety. It also helps him with eating and sleeping. It relaxes him. Without it, he isn't as successful.

Our doctor had us try the daytrana patch. It didn't work, so we upped his concerta.

I have been so happy with concerta that I hope it never stops helping my son, but I know that when puberty begins, we will have to start over with finding the right med and dose. I will cross that bridge when we get there!!

I have even made up doses, with the doctors knowledge, whe upping his milligrams to find the right level!

We love concerta! But everyone is different remember.

regards!
