Meds and appetite question... | ADHD Information

I am told, by dd and by her doc, they just dont feel hungry and when they do they feel full faster. It's a double whammy:  the stimulants make them not as hungry and increase their metabolism at the same time.    Not that I would tell anybody to do this, but I tried ritalin to see what the effect would be.  I didn't think about food all day.  It's no surprise that adderral was originally developed as a weight loss drug.

BUT not all kids are affected the same way.  Often you can make up the eating in the morning and evenings.  We gave my son 2 Ensure pluses a day for years.

My 7 year old son is on 15 mg of Ritalin 3 times a day.  I do notice if I give him his medication before he eats then he doesn't want to eat.  I have learned that if I give it to him right after eating that works the best.  This way he will still eat his meal.  Or if I give it to him before we eat, it is right before we eat so that it doesn't take affect until after eating.

I also found out that he can NOT take it before eating breakfast in the morning.  If he takes it before then he will throw up.

We gave my son 9 and small 5 mg Focalin XR in the am AFTER he ate a protien filled breakfast. He would eat a light lunch and a HUGE dinner and snacks until bed. Funny he said he had no appetite on it. But he took the time to actually eat.My son is 5 and was on Ritalin 2.5 mg once a day. We are getting ready to start Focalin XR 5 mg once a day. The Psychiatrist told me to moniter his appetite, as will she his height and weight. I was just curious, what makes kids not want to eat? Do they feel full? Nauseated? Uncomfortable? Thanks for reading. My youngest was just not hungry. On focalin we do not see the appetite suppression that we did on concerta, and on risperdal she eats really well (better than any other time of her life). vickie39392.9315277778
