Does ADHD get more intense at certain tim | ADHD Information

My son definatly gets more H in crowd and party situations. Now he is a little H at home too but nearly as bad as out in public. He is just so happpy playing most the time he can't help the H moments. We also get the meltdowns and crying and anxiety at home and My mom thinks we are nuts. Even after seeing him on meds and how different he was she still said there is nothing wrong with him. It is my fault he can't focus in school (ya right) Well now he refuses them so she has nothing to complain about there. My DS definitely has "ON" and "OFF" moments.  There are times that he is so "ON" that I almost forget that he had ADHD - Inattention and needs meds.  Of course there are also times that I think no amount of meds would be enough to get him to focus on anything other than playstation.  I do not notice it at any one time than another.  Although he has more problems during the school day than at home, but I attribute that to the fact that at home I am not asking him to read, write and do math facts over and over.

If my DS ever experiences anxiety I would never know it.  I call him socially indifferent.  You want to play him with fine, you don't want to play with him - fine.  He makes his own fun and does not ever care if someone else joins in or not.  He does enjoy playing with other kids, but they have to initiate it and the group has to be on the small side.  Large groups of kids running around do not do well.

Mine gets very adhd in exciting environments, and that includes being with his friends. Also when he is tired or hungry or stressed out.I get "more a.d.d" when I'm in big social settings or I feel the pressure to be "on" aka entertaining. I know that when I'm at a social event I see so many people I want to hug and talk to that I run around from person to person and it comes off as rude if my friends don't know I have a.d.d. It's interesting that he is less hyperactive at home.... but it makes sense that you see more meltdowns.. I know I'd meltdown every night at home over the stress from the day, I knew that being home was a safe place and I could meltdown and then move on...

Yes, I do see more symptoms at times, especially if DD is hungry( bs drop) or if she is stressed. Large crowds also make her anxiety level increase so we do have a behavior issue then also.

Is your ped doing an evaluation, or deciding to refer to a psych>

I was talking to our pediatrician last night, and he was surprised that I scored him much lower on his Vanderbilt study than his teacher did.  We then discussed that he seems to really get "ADHD-ish" when other children are around, especially at school, camp, and parties.  He even gets that way when he is around his younger sister.  He is most definitely on the hyperactive side of the spectrum, as I have seen this behavior first-hand at parties and stuff.  However, when it is just him at home, his symptoms lessen quite a bit.  (We mostly see the tantrums and emotional breakdowns at home when his sister isn't around, but no "H" symptoms like he has otherwise).

So now we are wondering how much is ADHD and how much is some other kind of anxiety disorder (needing the attention of other kids).

Does your child have "off" and "on" moments of ADHD or is it more of a consistent thing?

My son definetely gets overstimulated around large groups of people.  I actually just got off the phone with my father, who was telling me that my brother (age 33, recently dx'ed adhd) told him the reason he drinks so much in group situations is because the noisy crowded places make him feel confused and disoriented.

Any sort of stress can cause symptoms to worsen as well.  And then you've got the fact that some kids just really feed off the energy of the group, and just get faster and louder the more that's going on.

It is often said that the most consistent thing about adhd is it's inconsistency.

BTW- your screen name doesn't happen to come from the book A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore, does it?
