I agree with the others. Get a full evaluation from an ADHD expert.

We started the process of getting help for our son by first taking him to our peditrician. She agreed with us (and the school) that our boy might have ADHD. She was honest with us and said she's not an ADHD expert. She then referred to us an ADHD expert at our local chirdren's hospital. He then gave our boy a proper evaluation which involved many tests, observations, and discussions.

I'd also like to add... A child's first evaluation may not provide all the insight a doctor needs. Be prepared to take your boy to the doctor more than once. In our situation, it took about 1 year of observing our son to get all the answers we needed. And, although Jacob is doing great today, we continue to observe him in order to make sure he's getting properly treated.

Hello,

I have a six year old extrememly active six year old boy who I suspect has ADHD.  He has not been diagnosed, that is the reason for me seeking help from parents of children who have been diagnosed.  In addition, I want to know if the actions of my son are consistant with "real life" symptoms of ADHD.

My husband and I were first made aware of my son's inattention by his pre-school, when he was around 3.  He would not sit still and behave as the other children in his class.  Although he seems extremely bright at home and learns quickly, the school's grading reports do not reflect his knowledge.  Everything that he learns I mostly teach him at home because his teachers are constantly complaining of his behavior in class.  If he is hungry or sleepy, his behavior is worse.  He will go days with great behavior, then he will experience days of inappropriate behavior.

I want to have him tested for ADHD, but his pediatrician wants to have a full scale evaluation.  Is this costumary?   Should I have a full psychological performed at this time? Thank you in advance for you comments.

yes have a full evaluation. Dont just assume ADHD. Many, many things can mimic ADHD and cause behavioral issues and inattention. It may take a long time, but it's worth the wait to sort it all out.  You have his whole life.

You can develop some behavior modification plans, that will only benefit everyone, whether he has ADHD or not.

Yes, I would do what the physician says and have a full evalutaion done. This is the best way to know what is going on. It prepares you for what is going on and how to handle it. It may sort out a co-exsisting condition.

I agree with the others as well. Get a full evaluation from a pediatric neurolpsychologist.

I agree with the need for a full evaluation, to sort out any issues and co-existing issues. You can then better develope a stratagy for helping your son. It is also helpful to have this outside evaluation to help get accomodations and help at school.
