Metadate questions (child) | ADHD Information

My child also seemed too sedated by focalin xr for a couple of hours per day.  He switched to metadate cd in July, and we're not seeing that side effect any more.  He also doesn't have as much appetite suppression.  Hopefully your child also will do well with the switch! Thanks for the input. Our psychiatrist DOES recommend it, he is who prescribed it. It was a new pediatrician I was interviewing, who says she doesn't. Just wanted to clear it up. We will go to our psych for the meds. I just happened to bring up the ADHD to the new ped we were interviewing.  Sorry if I didn't make that clear, I must have been rambling!

Hello to all. For some of you that knew we were trying Focalin XR, 5 mg., it didn't work out, we gave it a week. He was becoming very introverted at school, withdrawn, and not wanting to participate. At home, he had several episodes of anxiety and frustration.

We prev. did 2.5 mg of Ritalin as a starter dose, but after 3 weeks, it quit working. We then tried the Focalin XR. I called the psychiatrist today and he suggested we try Concerta or Metadate. I thought Metadate would be a good option because I didn't want to battle each day over getting my 5 year old to take a pill. Having something we can sprinkle is very convientient for us both. I'm not sure what the dose is, because the script is coming in the mail. I would like to know more about Metadate, good/bad. Also, is it a name brand drug like Focalin, or is it more general like Methylin?

I interviewed a new ped yesterday, and we talked about ADHD meds. She mentioned several she presribes, she says she doesn't prescribe Metadate. Does it have a bad reputation? I would like to know more thanks.

My son took it for awhile.  It's a form of ritalin.  It's a lot like Ritalin LA but it releases in 3 increments instead of 2.  For whatever reason, it didn't work as well for him as the Ritalin LA.  Just a metabolic thing, according to the psychiatrist.  I can't imagine why your doctor doesn't prescribe it.   Ours says it's usually his first choice for a long acting Ritalin for kids who can't swallow a pill.

The only problem you may encounter is getting the prescription filled. It's not as commonly prescribed so the pharmacy was often out of it. Not good when your ADHD child has (coincidentally  - ha ha) forgetful parents who tend to do things at the last minute.
It is good you are going to the psych for meds and not the ped. They often know only minimal amounts about rxing ADHD meds of anything psychological at all really. Do not expect them to.Oh, no I wasn't expecting her to. We see the psychiatrist for the meds. I was only interviewing her as a new pediatrican, and I told her about my son's ADHD, and how I thought FocalinXR wasn't for him. We are now switching to Metadate. My son has been on Metadate now for almost a month.  He is taking 30 mg once a day.  This drug has been the best so far for him.   His doctor prescribed others and various things weren't working out with those meds.
So, I will say, so far...Metadate it is for us!
I'm also curious as to why your doctor doesn't prescribe this med.
