Why did your son refuse it and what is he taking now?My son is refusing it because he is 9 and his mama's boy. He won't own the ADHD so therefore why medicate it(his mind). He feels he doesn't need it and is under control. He does take meds for sleep, allergies, and Zoloft for his "stomachaches and headaches". It is working great for his moods. So no ADHD meds for now.......

My daughter started on dexadrine when she was 4, and continues on it now.  I find that sleep is a real concern, and so our doctor prescribed Strattera at night with her dinner.  She fell asleep quickly, and it helped with her morning routine too.  Unfortunately for us, the Stratterra caused her to wake up frequently during the night, and she only stayed on it for 6 days.  I think we are going to try Focalin...have you heard of that?  if you had any information regarding that, it would be extremely helpful.   (she was on 10 mg of Dexadrin in the Am, and 25mg of Strattera in the eve)  It might be something you could discuss with the dr...and each kid reacts differently, so it may not cause your son to wake up frequently....just a thought.

I love this forum.  It has really been helpful...and I'm sure it will continue to be.  What a comfort, knowing there are real people to discuss our issues with!

Focalin is just one part of Ritalin. The most effective. So it is dosed differently. It tends to have less side effect than the Ritalin but not for all. Everyone is different. It worked great for us for 2 weeks then my son started to refuse taking it. He is 9. I wish you luck with the Focalin!

Hi, I'm new here. Has anyone had experience with Dexedrine Spansules?
My 8 year old started 10mg yesterday. He has also been on Concerta (18 and 36 mg) and Medatade CD. His main probelm with all of these has been insomnia. He was up until 4:30 AM last night. I'm wondering if I should give it a week and see if it gets better before giving up. He was first on Ritalin short acting and that may be what we need to do because of the sleep. We were trying to find a mild acting stimulant that might help with the sleep side affect before going back to the short acting. Mainly because I don't want him to have to go to the office each day at school to take the meds.

FYI - He had trouble falling asleep before medication, but melatonin helped. Now the melatonin does nothing.

Any input would be appreciated!

how about Daytrana. You can put the patch on early a.m. before he gets up and then take it off after school. It works for 3 hours after taken off, about 1 1/2 hours for us. It gives you some flexibility of when to take it off. Start by taking it off about 4:00pm, then earlier if he still doesnt sleep. The mian drawback is it takes a LONG time to start working in the morning. You may need to get up a little earlier to get it on him while he's asleep or use a short acting Ritilan, then place pacth on the way out the door to school.
