CAER Treatment | ADHD Information
Hi everyone,
We are considering taking our teenage daughter to Spokane for Dr. Weathers' CAER therapy. I know this topic has been discussed before, but I would very much appreciate some fresh insights and shared experiences of parents who went through the program. We want to leave no stone unturned in getting help for our daughter. Still, while we are not looking for a guarantee, we want to be comfortable that this treatment is legitimate and has a reasonable track record of success. Also, we are worried about the "no medication" requirement for going through the treatment...the concern is not about giving up ADHD meds (we are fine with that), but her bipolar medications which keep her stable. Looking forward to hearing from other parents. Thank you in advance.
You sound like very concerned caring parents.
I guess the big questions are:
Are you willing to risk going AMA [against medical advice] by taking your child off bi-polar meds? Are you prepared for the possible fall out if the child can't manage without the meds?
Will this program allow you to call a random group of parents to see what they had to say about this program good and bad? Will they show you double blind statistical proof trial results from a neutral research agency?
Frankly, I read some of his stuff and ADHD IS neurological. A SPEC scan or MRI can prove it. I always have problems with anyone who has to BS to prove their theory. He may actually have excellent techniques to overdrive that neurological impairment--but negating it's existence completely is a red flag for me.
And NO real program on this planet can claim a 90% cure rate in three days for what is perceived as a mental problem. If ADHD is caused by years of trauma coping--ask yourself logically--could years of trauma "defense systems" be "undone" in a matter of days? I worked in social work and with psychs for a long time. This guy really reminds me of the bollocks untested theory that bad mothering causes schizophrenia.
Also, why use a "computer restructuring program" for something "non-neurological" if the idea is to change the neurological structuring? Logic is logic, after all.
An excellent, honest increase in functioning statistic would be around the 70% success rate per capita with improvement in the quality of life over the course of 6 months to 2 years.
Frankly, I think the guy is selling snake oil to concerned and guilt-ridden parents. I believe some alternative therapies are very useful. I suggest you buy the book and try out the techniques. If they work THEN consider whether or not you want to go to the course.
And I'm one of those people who do think overmedicating is a frequently a reality!
Now to be fair I've added this other input
