Hi I am new on here but I need some advice if possible. I have an 8 yr old that has been on Adderall xr 10mg for three months but recently he has started to have irritability late in the afternoon, I spoke to his psychiatrist yesterday and they upped the dosage to 20mg and said that it would make the transition smoother without affecting his sleep. I am very concerned over this and he also said if the increased dose doesn't work we would try Vyvanase (sp) I don't know what to do to advocate for my child can someone please lend some advice.

how has he been while on the 10 mg, except the rebound part?

I think it wouldnt hurt to try the increased dose for a bit, as you know how he is on that med, then if that doesnt do the trick, trying Vyvanse sounds very reasonable to me.

he has been doing great on the 10mg except for the rebound and other than recently no side effects it just seems like lately he has had alot of moodiness as the drug starts to wear off. Other than the difference in mental concentration he has been the same vivacious child. I am also concerned that it may make him act drugged up or zombie like. Thank you for your help with this do you think I am being overly concerned or should I just let it go and try what the Doctor suggests?no, I think you have a valid concern. I also think if he is not having any side effects it is worth trying the higher dose. If he gets zombie like or has any side effects, stop it. Then you can try something else. If this is the only thing he's taken, there a lot of options out there.Maybe you could get some 5 mgs and try increasing it in steps? 10 to 20
is a pretty good jump. My son just turned 7 and he is on XR also. He
actually needs 20 mg in the morning and 10 mg at noon, and that is not
lasting lately. He sleeps better with some still in his system, but I don't
think that is common. The psychiatrist we just started seeing said that
Adderall XR is different from Ritalin in that a larger dose lasts longer, it is
not just stronger. He said Vyanase (?) is the same compound, but longer
lasting.

Mostly, trust what your gut tells you!Thank you guys for all the support. You have been so helpful, I haven't been able to talk to many people about my concerns most of the parents I have encountered around here seem to think that meds are a way to control their children and not a way to control a vaild medical problem. I waited close to 4yrs before even concidering medication for my son because I was fearful of the long term affects, though knowing what I know now I wish that I had taking care of my childs issues sooner. The other option you may have is to just add a dose of short-acting Adderall in the afternoon (like 5mg).  That usually helps smooth out the rebound for those who have problems with it....
