Alternative education (?) | ADHD Information
I know of alot of people who went the home school route. I can't see doing it myself but it can work for some. We had a boy who worked partime at the library I work in and did schoolwork in the evenings. I think he only did a couple of hours per day after his parents got home from work. He was 15 so that would be different.
Just my thoughts,
My son was denied an IEP because he had to fail in the system, his educational grades are high he is gifted but his work habits are all 1's and 2's below grade level. Is that not failing? I agree an advocate is the way to go. I plan on getting one when we go in for middleschool here.
That is hogwash in my opinion.......did you request he be assessed? Do you know that if you request an assessment the school cannot deny you?????? He would at the minimum qualify for some special help with "study habits".....I would scream loudly and often to get that assessment....
Good luck hon, I've been where you are and I know how you are feeling.....

I am seriously considering a form of homeschooling myself.....check out WAVA...they are national accredited and it is more or less a virtual learning program....I am in the process of enrolling ds....don't ask me how I am going to pull this off but I can't sit by another year and watch the public school system fail my child in soooo many ways......

That really makes me mad.
And you read about how America is behind other countries as far as education and excelling in business. Boy if we would educate our children better, maybe we would excel in technology.
Go figure!

The key here is "educating" we are not educating our children anymore, they are being taught to pass some standardized test......IMHO

I know a friend whose son had to literally fail in the public school system before they would help him. The town is paying for him to go the appropriate private school for dyslexia and adhd. I wonder if you can prove that that is happening with your son?!
Fight for your son and his rights. He deserves & needs an education. The school is failing him. Update the IEP for your son's sake, but check into an advocate to support the fight to a school that specializes in dyslexia. They usually also deal with ADHD as well.
Let us know how the meeting goes!

OH he's been assesed and assesed and even though he pulled all below grade levels they don't think he heeds help.
This sounds like a case for an advocate.
This is horrible!
my ds is 12, dx adhd, dysgraphia, gad at age 7.......I am sooo fed up with the public school system I could scream....was wondering if anyone here had tried any kind of alternative education for their adhd kids....if so, how did you find it, was it effective and did your child do well??? TIA
Does he have an IEP or 504, is he getting any school accomdations? Fight for him. BELIEVE me I know the frustration. I've been advocating with the school for YEARS, my daughter is 13 and in 7th grade. I finally hired an educational advocate, expensive, but worth it. Now I can learn from her and not have the weight of the school world on my shoulders. It's amazing how much better they listen when you have some weight on your side. I've been able to focus on everything else. We are having a fairly successful year school wise now. Now she's acting like a regular teenager

.He does have an IEP, which sorely needs to be updated. I got a notice from the school the other day requesting and IEP meeting and when I saw the list of "their team" I about fell out of my shoes.....there are 11 people on that list. Soooo, I am researching now to see if I can find an outside advocate for my son. There is no way I am going head to head with that team.......first and foremost and I am going to request that he be reassessed prior to an IEP meeting.....to me having the meeting now puts the cart before the horse. We need the results of the reassessment in order to make sure the IEP is appropriate.
I have advocated for my son for many years and will continue to do but have reached a point that I can no longer do it on my own. My own knowledge of the IDEA the ADA, IEP's and 504's is fairly extensive but middle school is presenting all kinds of new challenges.....lol
Also.......one of this major issues we have at this point is the dr I took him to last (not his regular ped....his ped has left private practice) reduced his concerta from 45 to 27mgs.....which will do NOTHING for him......this dr sited a high blood pressure as the reason.....welllllll.....they took his bp once, not twice and this wasa new doctor, new office, new setting so of course his bp would be higher than normal.....he also sited ds was above the max doseage for his age which is not true, max dosage for him would be 72mg...soooooo there is another battle we are facing right now. This dr went so far as to tell me that "if I could control my child we wouldn't need meds"......what does that tell ya????? I could have slapped him silly!!!! LOL
hi and welcome! There are lots of alternative programs, you'll just have to do some searching. Be careful, and visit anywhere you look at it. You dont want to place in a more "restrictive" environment. A good place to start is looking on your states department of education website. Word of mouth is best though for private schools.....................Thank you Diane......this is sooo incredibly frustrating and unfortunately I live in one of the very few states that does not support charter schools, private schools here are horribly expensive so am at a loss at this point...... I am just so tired of watching my very brite little boy continue to suffer at the hands of the public school system so am researching other means......
DS tested 3 points from gifted but all the teachers see is his adhd.......I'm sure there are many here that know what that is all about.......
I agree, find an advocate.
You may want to find a different ped as well. If the BP reading is high they are supposed to re-check at the end of the visit, and possibly have you come back a couple days later to re- check again.
oh boy, you have your hands full. Well sounds like you're on the right path, and I agree, middle school is a whole different world. Find the advocate, you wont regret it. I agree just the odds at meeting is off balance, 11-1, thats how it always is. All you need is that one legal person next to you and things will get better.

Yes indeed.....I find myself totally unprepared for middle school. Unfortunately my "expertise" if ya wanna call it that has been sooo geared to elementary school level my comfort level has gone out the window.....LOL Soooo here we go....off to fight yet another battle with the public school system. I guess what frustrates me more than anything is the "lip service" I get from his school.....as an example ds was in trouble last week and when the principal called me he was "empathetic regarding ds meds not working and very understanding of ds adhd issues" THEN.....he tells ds "not having your meds is just an excuse and I'm not buying it".....this whole school situation would be so much better for all of us if they would be straight with us but they are so busy covering their own hinnies they don't take us or adhd seriously enough.......

That's my mission right now.....am looking at CHADD office here for some assistance and at the NIMA but so far haven't gotten far.
I def need a new ped, his prev ped was a wonderful man and great doctor I miss having him in our corner but he went to a teaching childrens hospital.....soooo in addition to everything else I am on the search for a new ped. I agree totally about the bp.....every time ds has had a check up they always check his bp at the beginning of the visit and again at the end......this guy was just a crackpot imho, def wont be going back there......:)
