Guess what I just found out?? | ADHD Information
In my search for alternative education for ds I spoke with the director of the WA Charter School iniative......he told me that if I feel my son is cannot be given "A Free and Appropriate Education" within the public school district that I can have him place in a private school that specializes in special needs and that the school district has to pay for it." WOW......I had no idea !!!!
He told me to call the school district and ask them for a list of private schools they are currently paying expenses to for the special needs kids within the district and that by law they have to provide that information to me......
I don't know about the rest of you but this was incredible news for me that brings with it a ray of hope for my son.......
Hi Jasmom,
I have a child in a private school that is being paid for by my school district (not ADHD).
The way it works is you need to get an IEP for your child first, and then a series of meetings to determine the appropriate placement for your child. There's a section on this board devoted to IEP's if you need help with the process...
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to persuade some schools to pay for private placements. I was lucky though... our district was all for the idea.

ds has an IEP although it does need to be updated......thanks for the info on the board for those...I'll go check them out......this particular school simply does not want to deal with ds so I may not have may problems getting him placed elsewhere.....
Yes, but school's don't do this willingly. They fight you tooth and nail. Get out your checkbook if that is your plan.I will have to agree with NoTellin, them "not wanting to deal with him" does not mean they want to foot the bill for a private school. If they are not educating him appropriately, however, they will have to. So get your "ducks in a row" as they say and have all your documentation ready, make sure they are not honoring the IEP and meeting the annual goals. Then search away for the BEST placement. A lot of private schools for SPED kids are more children with signficant emotional disabilities. Just be sure it's a placement your child will fit in and be successful in. Remember you really want your child in the "least restrictive environment".
