We would give Carnation Instant Breakfast for breakfast and before bed. I'd add ice cream (the highest calorie kind I could find).
I LIKE that idea!!
Our child didn't eat well even before beginning stims, and with them it only got worse. He MD put him on Periactin to increase his appetite, and it worked great. The carnation instant breakfast, and ice cream, is a great and yummy idea!
"Our Children are Precious in His Sight"
I had a very skinny kid for years. In elementary school he ate pretzels with peanut butter for lunch almost everyday for years. I packed more of a snack rather than lunch. I always put a cookie or something sweet in his lunch as per the doctor's instruction. Now I realize that helped keep his blood sugar up in the afternoon.
We have been through several meds. I can't remember what happened with concerta it was 6 years ago. Adderal XR has had the most serious effect on his appetite. We did 6 months on modafinal and gained 35 pounds. We are on vyvanase and he has grown 1.5 inches and put on 9 pounds in the last 4.5 months since we started. ( We have also started puberty, so that might account for some of the growth.)
Did you ever think about getting him involved in food preparation? That could spark an interest in food.
Have you had him try fruit smoothies? You can add protein powder to them to boost their value. He might enjoy a smoothie for breakfast or after school snack
Each kid is different and maybe a med change is warranted. You need to talk to the doctor about his weight and what you can do.
YES! Wendy's frosties. They are made from potatoes. If the kid will use the frostie as a french fry, all the better. (No, I'm not a fast food fan, but my kid is disappearing!!)My 9 year old is too skinny and his appetite is poor on Concerta Any foods that are good for weight gain. I try to give him his meds early in the morning to minimize disruption of sleep but then it effects his breakfast and lunch. Truth is, he doesn't seem very hungry at dinner or on Sundays when he doesn't take any meds. We see the MD on Tues and am considering asking for a med change.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - Thanks
My son was on FocalinXR and he ate better than when he is not on meds, he's so hyper he won't tske the time to eat. He chose to go off but is reconsidering after this weeka report card, it ead his worse one.We would give Carnation Instant Breakfast for breakfast and before bed. I'd add ice cream (the highest calorie kind I could find). My daughter never ate well, is now eating better, mid puberty and on Strattera, but she's still only 82 pounds at 5'2". she has been in the 10th percentile for weight since birth. This is a big issue for our family as we struggle with our 8 year old ADHD son who was extremely low birthweight (790 grams, 1lb 10 oz) His appetite has decreased dramaticaly!
The one thing I have had some success with is the following recipe which I got from a pediatric oncology site, and I modified it slightly. It is about the best tasting thing I ever tasted, and has about 1175 calories!!
3/4 cup creamo ( or whole milk)
1/4 cup whipping cream (not whipped)
1 tbsp peanut butter
3 tbsp chocolate syrup
2 scoops vanila ice cream..the good, high fat kind :)
it fills a medium size glass and most kids will love it!
great ideas. My son is only 58lbs at age 10 and while tall for his age, very skinny. He is starting to complain that the kids tease him and tell him he is weak!!
I am going to try the shake. SOunds YUMMMY Too bad I cant eat it too!! LOL
Verybadkitty,
Your recipe sounds great! I'm going to try it.
I have this not gaining weight in my dd too...she's on Concerta and like clock work between 7-8 pm she eats everything, I do mean everything, in sight! I wil try carnation breakfast and ice cream...sounds yummy!
