My 6 year old dd is on Concerta 18mg. She has a cold so I called the physc. and they told me to give her Benedryl(sp?)...I am wondering how it will effect her. Normal people go to sleep, but people with ADHD may make them hyper? Has anyone used this? If not, what have you used?
It will either make her sleep or jnot, it is just about the only safe thing she can take. There is also Claritin, regular NOT D.
I use the dye- free kind cause the food dyes tend to make my kids more hyper. I typically only give it to him at night so he can sleep, but I will give it to him occasionally during the day if he's coughing really bad. Other than that lots of fluids and sometimes I can get him to drink my special herbal tea concoction.
I give my son Benadryl and it seems to little effect on his behavior as far as being hyper or not. When his allergies are really bothering him before bedtime we give him Zyrtec which is a prescription. That knocks him out which sometimes is a welcomed thing we've always used Claritin in the day and Benadryl at night.Benadryl makes my ADHD child tired and my non ADHD child not tired (not hyper, but not tired)I give my daughter benedryl also. It does not make her hyper, it makes her sleepy. My daughter and I are both on Adderall Xr. Our doctor has cautioned me about anything with a decongestant in it. Apparently, they will potentiate the effects of stimulants. He has suggested benadryl, claritan, and the non-decongestant form of Robitussin. I always try these first if she or I have colds or sinus problems. If they are not effective, I always check back with him before trying something else.I give my son Claritin or Benadryl if he is just stuffy & sniffly, or Mucinex
