I am new here and thought I would see if any of you out there experienced this with their children. My son is 17 years old and has tried several meds in the past two years for ADHD, he has a terrible time on these meds. The meds he has taken (please excuse spelling) Aderol, Strattera, Concerta, and Dexedrine and they all make his hands look like the blood has dranined form them along with very cold all over, and agitated. These meds help him focus however the side effects are not worth the trouble. He and I would really like to find a med that would help with ADHD without these side effects. Any help would be appreciated. BTW I took one pill of each drug to see if they affected me the same and they do. Any help would be wonderful.
My son has been on several different stimulants as well - Ritalin, Dexedrine, and Adderall. His psychiatrist suggested that he try a drug called Wellbutrin - although it is in the same class as an anti-depressant, the chemical make-up helps with ADHD with very little side effects. Start on the smallest dose of 150 mg. per day in the morning. It is designed for 24 hour coverage.
Good luck
Mike
Mike thank you so much we have a really good doctor and he told my son the minute he has a side effect like this go off and he will put him on another one. We will be trying focalin tomorrow if that doesn't work we will be trying Wellbutrin next. Does the Wellbutrin work for your child? I am so relieved to read your message. Stef39429.2605671296Good Luck with the Focalin it has a good side effect profile. If not there are many more out there.
Good Luck with the Focalin it has a good side effect profile. Along with my first post about questions on medicine and side effects in my first post up above, I forgot to say he displays anger on the meds. Is that normal?
I was just wondering if there are others out there with the same reactions to medicines I listed. Please tell me what worked for you.
Any help would be appreciated.
Just google Focalin or Focalin XR side effects and alot will come up.
is he having the mood issue off meds too?
I would call that an understatement just horrible sometimes well to be honest Iwant to give up on helping him sometimes.
I was just wondering if it was the meds CAUSING the mood swings. If you dont have luck with Wellbutrin, ask about the tricycylic antidepressants, most specifically, Desipramine. My daughter did very well on this med, but she needed more help with focus at school. She is extremely inattentive. She was very, very even keeled on the Desiprmaine. Her mood was good, she was not impulsive, able to stay on task, I really liked her on it, but we couldnt dose her high enough for the focus concerns. It is one fo those meds that does NOTHING if it's dosed too low, but can be dangerous if dosed too high. Our doc was very cautious and like I said we were very happy on it until school started.
is he having the mood issue off meds too?just my two cents. my daughter was on focalin xr for several months, i really loved it, and she had NO rebound, where with other methelyphenidate (sp) meds she would. Also, most side effects do lessen over time, so it might take a couple of weeks or a month to iron out the kinks.
