| ADHD MEN: meds advice (ritalin=impotence) | |||
| |
Hello all ADHD MEN, Need advice about meds: I'm a healthy mid-30's male with raging ADHD, recently diagnosed (finally!). Been on ritalin (2 doses of 20mg, 2 hours apart) - results are great, but unquestionably it gives me boner-loss :-( No good! Wife threatening to flush meds... ;-) Please recommend other good meds. Parameters are: - same focusing/calming effects as ritalin - no erection-loss, obviously - longer duration would be nice, like 4 hours or greater - price not an issue - minimal side effects Would like personal experience info with Dexedrine, Desoxyn, Adderall in particular. Any others? thanks, Soupy P.S. BEFORE ANYONE GOES OFF ON A RANT about the need for me to get professional advice, and each person is different and all that - I KNOW! I am just trying to gather subjective experiential info so I can be better informed in the discussion which will follow with my health care provider. Thank you. my husband is on ritalin, sometimes 20mg 3x a day,blood pressure medication,seroquel for bi-polar/anxiety....he has NO interest in sex, he manages maybe once a month if i really press the issue but am learning to go without and try to focus on the good things about our relationship, but i cant say there are times it hurts, since my ex wasnt interested much either, maybe once a week...i have other men flirting with me quite often, so i dont think its the way i look or anything...i know blood pressure medicine is usually the culprit but since i read your post i wonder about the ritalin now... does it take away the interest too or just the mechanics of it? does anyone know if this is a common side affect for most men on ritalin? i have a feeling there are quite a few of us with add signifacant others that maybe have more sexual problems than others, i have always wondered...would like to hear some more opinions though if anyone feels comfortable about sharing.... Of all the ADD drugs Ritalin has the least sexual side effects. It always made me "randy, " so I'm quite surprised to hear about your experience. All the rest of the meds are worse. But the problem isn't the meds, it's the changes in your brain chemistry. From what I understand brain chemestry balance is the culprit so start there. A good supplement regiment: (Vitamin B, Zinc/Magnesium, Multi-vitamin, lots of water) can help. Also, Ginkgo Baloba is recommended for the sexual side effects of SS "Antidepressants can also create difficulties with arousal and orgasm. (They can affect men too, who may experience erectile dysfunction as well.) It all has to do with a balance between the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain. "Antidepressants, especially the SSRIs, only increase serotonin," explains Dr. Rosenberg. "The lack of increase in dopamine, a chemical in the brain's pleasure center that we believe is required for maintaining sexual interest, affects satisfactory sexual function." Obviously I am talking about the little fellow who used to say hi every morning. It seems as though he is in a coma. This past Sunday I thought he was back, maybe he just needed time to think for awhile. I was visiting the girl I am currently seeing (we weren't doing anything sexual, just playful touching and kissing) and he was at attention. That thrilled me (pun intended)... except for the fact that he passed out like a drunk after a minute. That was dissapointing. Hope fluttered awhile later but it was a false alarm. Now hes just hanging there, mopeing around. Never had this problem until I started taking Adderall. This girl I recently started seeing is really amazing, so I'm afraid to even think if anything sexual is going to happen. "Sorry baby, guess you scared him." or "Didn't I tell you I was impotent? Guess it slipped my mind." I have a feeling that won't go over too well and she might stop calling me. I typically get sick of girls right away. I always find a huge personality flaw that pisses me off. I try to deal with it but it is impossible to deal with. Now, I finally found a girl worth seeing and I am as useless as a eunuch. I can't stop taking Adderall because I need the focus for school (2.5 weeks left including finals) and for my job. But is it worth it? It's not like my sex drive is going to get any better then at this age. I mean he IS part of me. He should have a say in this too. I mean when he was a regular visitor he called the shots most of the time anyways. Sometimes regret followed and sometimes he shows up at bad times. But he shouldn't be punished like this should he? With one little pill he, my manhood, has been put to sleep and Im not sure if he is going to make it back. Frustrating, isn't it? Sadly, just like the rest of ADHD, I think I am just going to have to accept it. ---Rest In Peace little guy. We had some fun times. Apparently no one found my characterization of my "guy" funny. I was just trying to bring humor to a utterly frustrating situation. Well soupy, to definitively answer you question, adderall is just as bad. OK so yes, I found your message funny. Although it is not at all a humourous situation, as I'm sure you know. Personally, I have taken myself off the meds, as I would much rather be unfocused, grumpy and irritable, than go through the awful experience of having to abort mid- sex and deal with the emotional aftermath, humiliation and frustration. Good luck with your girl: I sympathize, and I hope everything works out for you. :-) As for shinsetu_hito's reply: So thanks for the reply, but none of that natural stuff or vitamins is working. Further, just for clarity, let me say that yes, ritalin makes me very horny also, as you said. But being horny and actually having an erection apparently are two different things. As for Sunnydaize's reply: I sympathize. :-( WIsh I had a solution for you. Viagra? anyhow, thanks everyone for the info... OK. Well I'm not sure why you asked for advice when you're not interested in taking said advice when it's given. But I'll try once more. I had the same issue (but with Adderall) If you have sexual desire but can't get an election this is clearly a blood flow problem. Ginkou Baloba is a blood flow medication. If you try the Ginkou Baloba it will increase the blood flow to the small surface areas of your body. (this equates to an election) Give it a try. Also, Ritalin robs the body of nutrients (it depletes them.) I'm not holistic at all I'll take meds over vitamins any day of the week. But in this case you are simply replacing the nutrients burned off by CNS stimulant use. And an even more important bit of advice, Ritalin will stop working at the point you have low potassium, Zinc or Magnesium. I had a similiar response at first. I currently take 10mg/ twice a day. Somedays I take less/more depending on what's going on that day. I noticed sexual dysfucntion at first, I'm now convinced it was most in my head (pressure). Nevertheless, you might want to ask your docter about adding the drug Wellburtin to your regimine. It's a drug used to treat anxiety but I know of several cases where it was prescribed to treat sexual dysfunction caused by medication. Finally, if you experience "numbness" down there you might want to concentrate on alone time. I'm not trying to be graffic but perhaps touching your nipples or some other zone (personal exploration) might be the new key to success. It won't hurt and masterbation w/out the threat of someone in close contact may hold a key. Sorry If i'm too graffic. I hope I'm of some help. eewww! gross. Little Nicky: Good luck with the nipple rubbing!
Adam Sandler's "Little Nicky."
Guess I wasn't clear. I am a fitness trainer part time: I am VERY knowledgeable on the subject of viatmins & supplements. I am already taking a ton of various vitamins, supplements and tonics, as part of my daily regime, which include all the stuff you mentioned as a possible solution, and several others for that matter. Therefore when I say "none of that stuff is working". What I mean is: "Yes, I have tried all that stuff, at high doses in fact, for a period of 2 weeks, but the problem persisted." Additionally and for the record, ginko biloba is primarily a vasodilator of the micro-vessels in the brain and is consequently believed to enhance memory and brain function (and possibly assist in the prevention of Alzheminer's). This action is farily specific and localized and I have not heard of being used to assist with erectile function, however I'm willing to concede this point, as it seems logical. Additionally it has some useful antioxidant properties. Now yohimbe on the other hand, definitely is *proven* to enhance blood flow to the genital area in both men & women. (No, men, don't waste your money, it will not make your penis larger.) I take it occasionally, and it certainly *helps* but it is not a perfect solution, especially since it makes my heart pound (a common side effect). Thanks for your reply though - all info is definitely appreciated! :-) Today, I got a prescription for dexedrine, so we'll give that a try. Does anyone know the actual chemical structure of this stuff (dextroamphetamine)? I can't find a .pdb or .mol file of it anywhere. Anyhow thanks everyone. Soupy Dexedrine is a brand name for D-amphetamine, powerful stuff. ok, i think we are all adults here.... so noone should feel offended...sexual problems can be a very big deal in a relationship, but hopefully the other good points will outweigh the bad if both truly care about the other but it definately can complicate things....i dont have any answers, just to hang in there (no pun intended) and keep researching....and dont forget cuddling and kissing are important too, i would like more of that even if the other isnt available.... To: Sunnydaize,
oops! No offence taken or intented from me. (Hey I've got ADHD: social communication difficulties are definitely part of my symptoms :-) Please don't take me the wrong way... (story of my life!) Hope I didn't come across the wrong way.) Re: the "issue" - I'm not too sensitive about it, given that it is well within my control - just go off the meds, and the problem disappears (thank God!) Re: "hang in there" LOL you're hilarious! Re: "cuddling": yes that stuff is important... but... well put it this way, my wife threatened to flush my meds. She's pretty great! ;-) To: Rae70 Re: "meds time duration": no, no. I've been on ritalin for 2 months, I was on all the viatmins and suppplements for 2 weeks, to see if that aided the issue, which it didn't. Thanks for the links, those had a lot of info. to: shinsetu_hito D-amphetamine - powerful stuff? Well... really? I hope it's safe... see below. THIS IS THE GOOD PART - READ THIS: Thanks to everyone who replied. I am now on the dexedrine time release (called Dexedrine Spansule - expensive, but longer acting), and I must say, I REALLY prefer it to ritalin - WAY better. Less weird feelings, longer duration (one dose per day! good all day long!) way better mood elevation and calming effect, better focus. No peaks and valleys like with ritalin. However, the bad news is, I'm *pretty* sure the "issue" will still be there, as this drug seems to be a vasoconstrictor also - but I haven't had time to test this theory yet ;-) only started on it yesterday... None the less, I am MUCH happier with this new med, I highly recommend it. Anyhow, thanks again everyone, and I'll keep you posted while I search for a solution to this issue. SoupyHi, I've been taking dexamphetamine for years, and this product worked for me. http://www.vigrx.com/ No I'm not spamming. A place i worked at was selling this stuff, but re-branded. It took a week or so to begin working, but then it was great. Even brought back a proper flacid 'hang'. I can't get it now because of which country I live in, but if I was in the USA, I"d buy this. When I was on Adderall, it seemed to affect my drive more than anything. Just didn't feel driven anymore. The doctor took me off it ASAP and two weeks later when the stuff finally got out of my system my "horns" grew back. Um..I'm just throwing this in as a suggestion and this is coming from a female but how about Strattera? There are sexual side effects my doctor said, I don't know if she meant increase or decrease though ^^; Hope everything works out for the both of you. I know Adderall (amphetamine) and Desoxyn (methamphetamine) can both cause this as well. A somewhat relevant article on those two stimulants is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_and_sex ... see the "Crystal Dick" part. (Adderall and Desoyxn have the same effects in the CNS, but Desoxyn is 50% more effective in the same dosage) Ah, the sexual side effects of these mind altering drugs. I could write a book. Luckily, we have choices. My rule is that if the side effects out weight the benefits, dump the drug and try another one. I'm also bp so I have much experience in this area. My attempts at dealing with ADHD started with Adderall (not pleasant), then Stratterra (big bad mojo in my bod) and finally Ritalin. Bingo! It's a winner and no sexual side effects thus far (your mileage may vary). Maybe because I was a child of the sixties I have no trouble experiementing with different drugs. I suggest that those experiencing bad side effects try the same. Remember, we all seek "better living thru chemistry".
Levitra helps in treating impotency and ED disorders in men suffering from risky medical conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. This is the reason why this medicine is being preferred over other impotency medicines. But this medicine should only be used in accordance with the instructions of the physician. People looking for online information of Erectile Dysfunction and Levitra can visit http://www.levitrabliss.com The second is that of concentration. If one's mind is wandering in the Himalayas, whether the dog needs to be neutered, does the boss need that paper by the morning, what to do about the kitchen tile that is lifting and whether or not crabgrass is taking over the lawn--it's difficult to pay attention long enough to relax and enjoy the experience. Anyway, that's been my experience... |
