My daughter gets tics, they come and go. Stimulants really exacerbate them. Any time she's gotten "ticcy" with stims they only stopped when we stopped the stim...........
I'm wondering if that is what my son's problem is...since he's started meds (he's on Daytrana) he is constantly blinking, squinting or rubbing his eyes. I thought it was just his meds drying out his eyes, but maybe it's a tic?epokey, yes it probably is a ticMy daughter has tics off and on. Her's is the eye blinking thing. It seems worse when she is anxious. Sometimes they seem worse in the evenings when the med's are wearing off or out of her system.
I have been learning a lot about Tics lately, my son began snorting sounds lately. He was diagnosed with Tics possibly due to the stimulant he was taking. I stop the stimulants on the weekend and the sounds stop. His MD recommended risperdal due to his difficulties tolerating stimulants. He gets very emotional and angry with the stimulants. I would rather him with all of his ADHD symptoms than making a constant sound that is embarassing to him. His MD said that risperdal is the proper medication to treat both ADHD and the tics. I stopped the stimulant-the sound stopped. I'm not comfortable giving him an anti-psychotic just yet, but I'm weighing my options. Remember we have to not allow our kids to be "weird" or "different" especially at school. It's difficult.my 6yo dd does the same thing, it is more pronounced in the morning, i think with her that she has a dry mouth. it usually subsides the longer she is on a med, but comes back if we have to increase her dosage. i try to keep her REALLY hydrated. i give her almost anything she wants to drink, and she can't leave for school in the morning unless she finishes her drink. i find that this helps, i notice that if i slack on her fluids it comes back.
try loading him up on fluids to see if it helps. btw, my daughter also has really dry lips and i notice that if i miss a day of pushing fluids her dry lips come back.
sylvia, look at the tricyclic antidperessants (mostly Desipramine). My daughter did very well on this. NO tics, none at all, very even keeled mood, or stopped her impulsivitiy. Her BIGGEST issue is inattention though and it wasnt good enough for this for school. She had NO side effects , except she got a little tired. We split the dose and she was fine. She gets side effects form most everything. The side effect listings sound scary (dont they all), but if your physician does a pre EKG and blood work and labs to check levels until you are at target dose it really helped her. We would have stayed on it if it had done enough for focus, but it just wasnt doing it for school. She is now taking Strattera so far successfully.
