A behavioral ped told me that up to six mg is OK for a child. I started at .5 mg which worked just fine. It's for falling asleep.

To stay alseep, spamula, you should check out valerian root. Maybe you dont' need that sleep med.

Hey No Tellin, I have tried Valerian Root and it did nothing. Nothing does anything. I am up now at 3am despite my myriad of meds. I have chronic severe insomnia, sleep apnea and circadium rythum disturbance and RLS.Oh yeah and ADHD! Oh well thanks for the tip anyway. spamula39435.2754976852

aw man that sucks Spamula, i know lately i have been waking at 3 or 4 am, and not always being able to fall alseep again, and boy am i cranky in the morning!

Anyhow ladies, i have tried melatonin for my daughter, it's liquide form, i like that better, ii first gave her .3, it din't take nearly as long to fall asleep, maybe 45 min insted of over an hour, and last night i gave her .5 about 45 min before bedtime, and she was sleeping by 9pm, so way better than 10pm!

The pharmasist i talked to( not my regular pharmasist) din't know to mutch info for kid about melatonin, i will go see my regular pharmasist later, but from all the great info i find on this site, i am confident about it!

thanks again!

The Liquid is good as well. My son goes to bed at 8pm because he is up by 5 no matter what. So I give him 3 mg or so around 20 to 8 and by the time his show is over he is ready to sleep. works like a charm. Tanks for the concern it is a b@^#% to say the leasy I usually end up napping late in the afternoon and then I am up the next night again, what a pain. oh well. Tere is a neurologist here that deals with this but he does not take ANY insurance and I can not afford him.

There are several older post about melatonin, but i though i'd start a new one!

What can you tell me about melatonin, it's not a drug right? and can be bought over the counter? how is it affecting your kids, and is it addictive?

Melatonin is a ntural chemical that the body makes to induce sleep. It is not a drug, it is also not addictive like sleeping pills can be. It is OTC, and you should start at a very small dose, like .33mgs. Do not go over 3mgs ever.

Both my son and I take Melatonin for sleep and it works great for him and it puts me to sleep but does not keep me there, I still need to take sleep meds with it. I think it is strong enough for most children though and 3 mg is what my son takes. When he takes more he can get nightmares, Although our ped and psych told us 5 mg is o.k.?????

You have been given good info from edbson and spamula. It can be a great natural sleep aid for many, with few posible side effects. My oldest takes 1/3 to 1/2 of a 3mg pill and it works very well for her. It does not work for my youngest or myself.

Great for you with only 1/2 a mg that is great! I am happy it is working so far.i give josh the cherry flavor ones, he takes 1 1/2. but it does'nt seem to do alot for getting him to sleep, he's so little i hate to increase him.Hey spamula, this one product has worked for all troubled sleepers that I know: Enzymatic Therapy Revatilizing Sleep Formula. The stuff is expensive, but it works. I think I bought it at Whole Foods. Anyway, a store along those lines should have it. I have mild sleep issues compared to you, but I wonder if meditation or yoga would benefit? Have you tried?well this is the third time i give my dd .5ml of melatonin 45 min before bed, and she was passed out in 15 min if not sooner! with just .5!! i'm so exited abut it, now she gets home in a good mood insted of cranky!Oh yes I have tried biofeedback, meditation, exersice, yoga and of course meds but nothing seems to help the situation. I do not sleep. Here I am at 3am with nothing to do so I get online and try to educate myself.

You don't say how many mg he is on. You can go as high as 5 or 6 if he is on meds I would try that first for 1 night , you can always stop them.

Melatonin has always worked well for my son.  I give him a quarter of a 3mg pill (a pain to split, fyi, but more gives him a headache).  He only gets it if for some reason he had to take his medication later than usual and it's affecting his sleep.

My husband takes half a pill and it works well for him too.

Seriously spamula, try the Enzymatic Therapy Revatilizing Sleep Formula. It helped two of the most troubled sleepers that I know.

hey, spamula, seriously, try Enzymatic Therapy Revatilizing Sleep Formula. I've had a couple of people with SERIOUS sleep issues fall asleep with that stuff. O.K. NoTellin I'll chech it out. Anything is worth is try at this point.
