behavior on meds | ADHD Information

One suggestion for better replies, be very concise.  Remember this is a forum for attention DEFICIT people.  I'm not trying to be mean, I've just learned from years of experience.  And for true effectiveness, use bullets!  Speaking of: First, I must say I didn't read your entire post.  I only scanned. A remark about the aggression.  Aggresiveness is a characteristic of ADHD.  There's not much you can do about it.  In fact, I've got a few friends who are philosophers/psychoanalysts and we've been discussion behavior modification and medication.  The medication will suppress some of your child's natural characteristics. However, the human body/mind will rebound from this when the medication wears off or if your child skips a day. I've noticed that I'm about 3 times as hyper on my days off.  But if I stay off for a few days, my hyperactivity subsides to an almost controllable level I'm not a parent so my advice is limited in some sense.  But it may have some value considering I might be the bridge between you and your children.  By that I mean that I am 25 years old.  So I've had enough time to reflect on my childhood and appreciate my parents. I look back realize that I love being ADHD, especially hyper.  It's made me the person I am today and I wouldn't have it any other way.

So I hope this is of some merit to you.

Hi! My son Matt has been on Staterra for about a yr now 25mg was not enough so he then got 30mg (3 ten mg pills in the am). Then 3 months ago we went up to 35 and was great but at a check up a month ago she was confused and thought we went back down to 30. I said no still 35 but she decided to only refill for 30 mg. Now  I know during the doseage changes they can be overly emotional but since going back to 30mg he has been agressive, hitting and having temper outbursts. I can't take him anywhere cause he is forever deciding when we leave and what we do due to his fits.We did also try the stimulant meds but he got tics so Staterra is our only choice for that reason as well as he has sleeping probs and takes trazodone to sleep. The ONlY hope I have is Staterra. It has to work. The dr put him up to 40 mg yesterday he weighs 50 lbs. But I see a very very slight tic-maybe its my overactive mind. I know 1 day on 40 mg could not possiby start affecting him-I have been told it takes bout 2 wks to take effect and build up. But I keep thinking 35 mg was good. Not great,I don't see all the results I would like but is 100 times better than no Staterra.I was in tears everyday before. I also have a 4 yr old son and a 7 yr old son. The 7 yr old is on Adderall-works great for him-perfect in fact. Staterra has to work. It is our only hope. I want him to be happy and healthy and learn. A big part of the prob is that the stupid elementary school does not have a morning preschool now. He still needs a nap and is not very focused in the pm. I get nots from teacher that he fell asleep in class again. What does she want me too do? Hes tired. Its  not his fault he can't go to school in the am when he pays more attention and can learn  and retain info. Some helpful info I did read in here tonight however was that maybe he should take his adhd meds at night. This is a thought I did not think of. Maybe he would not be AS tired. I will call dr in the am. This is all soo stressful for him -he hates changes meds and anything else-he like routine.Stressful for me too. All my boys are active and I am judged for that too by friends and family."Our boys are not that hyper,What do you feed them"  " Our girls never do the things ur kids do" Its like everyone is saying we are awful parents. The best is" you need to disipline your kids, u r too passive" I swearMy kids must know every texture mark in the paint from the time out cornor. I do disipline. But I have learned to pick ur battles. Its all just sooo frustrating. This is a huge message I know but does any of this make sence to anyone else? I hope so or maybe I'm the one who needs meds-LOL! Thx for reading it all, Your messages are comforting to me. I hope his tirades fade away soon as the higher dose takes effect. Teacher, daycare and principal have called me about the hitting. However the dentist last week found a broke molar with infected cavity.Has to get a kid root canal or remove the tooth. Funny that behavior changed same time as tooth prob AND lowering dose of meds to 30mg from 35. Which is causing the agression? Anyway---Thx again- Matty's Mommy  It sounds like you should stick with 40 mg for a while and give it a chance to work and see how it goes. You said that the 35 mg was not giving you all the results you wanted. Give the 40 mg a few weeks and if there are problems you can back down to 35 mg.
