Son hearing voices - side effect? | ADHD Information

Share

My 8 yo son was diagnosed with ADHD three months ago and we started him on Metadate at that time - now at 20 mg. He told me last night that he hears voices. The voices don't tell him to do anything they just say random things. He's a very imaginative and creative child - could it just be that or is it the meds. He's doing so well on this medication - some sleep problems and has lost weight but doing really well at school and at home. I'm going to call the dr but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and will it stop if we switch meds or stop the meds. So scary!

Has he been evaluated for Bi Polar? Meds could exacerbate any bp symptoms.

Hearing voice is usually a psychotic symtom from what I believe.  I wouldn't freak out about it.  Just mention it to the psychiatrist.

jomac, I'ts not the meds. I heard voices for years when I wasn't on any
medication. Sometimes I would hear people say things as they are walking
by me and they didnt even say a word. I'd hear my alarm clock go off and it's
not even going off. Ever since I started taking Vyvanse I don't hear voices
anymore and I don't hear my alarm clock. I've been taking it for about four
months and things are going well. He sounds like me i'm very creative and
imaginative. I'm a professional graphic designer and write music too. I hear
songs in my head then I sing them. I wrote my first song at 7 years old, and
wrote two good ones this year that I might be able to sell. Does your son
sing things or make up songs? My daughter had a similar experience when she was taking prozac about 2 years ago.  Her behavior had become very bizarre prior to this.  We demanded that the prozac be d/c'd, and the voices stopped. steppingstone39440.9675231481 Just to ease your mind a little.  Not very common, but our psychiatrist and pediatrician told us that kids sometimes hallucinate on these meds. Hallucinating hearing voices could possibly be in the same family. Did your son hear voices prior to meds?  If not, then I would think it is from the meds.  I would speak to the Dr. ASAP. Good Luck!!
