Pill Swallowing - Help | ADHD Information

put it in pudding or peanut butter. Then advance to yogurt and/or applesauce and eventually liquids. I don't know if the cup really works or if it was psychological, but this cup taught my child how to swallow pills.  It's worked for several other people, too.  It might be worth a shot.  CVS, Rite Aide, etc. sell something called The Pill Taker's Cup.  It's made by Ezy Dose.  There's a spot where you put the pill, and the rest is a normal cup.  You drink out of the cup normally, and supposedly the pill will slide down your throat due to the way the cup positions it.

I was giving my 6 year old Strattera at night by opening up the pill and pouring into apple sauce...needless to say he almost threw up from the taste of it. I had him swallow a few tic tacs (which happen to be one of his favs) and he had no problem. That night he swallowed it like a pro! The next morning I offered to let him swallow his Focalin XR that he has been on for almost 2 years now, and he did it!

Sadly it was a big deal for me, when I was little, I took asthma meds which I made my mother open and pour into jelly, mind you I still made her do it till about 12. I told him that and he laughed and called me a wimp!

We do the same thing as "ilovemyboys", have him drink a mouthful of water and then I put the pill in so it "floats" and he swallows it & drinks more water.  He's 5 so the pill "floating in his mouth" is considered fun.great ideas! I'm having the same issue with my son. He ends up in tears cause he's so scared to swallow a pill! Practice swallowing tic tacs, then M&M's. If they can swallow an M&M whole they can swallow anything. I have the tic tacs, and he crys when I ask him to try ... go figure.. the other day he swallowed a Werthers Original! A big butterscotch candy.. but then it hurt going down .. which now is making it even worse to get him to swallow something! I have a 10 year old who has major issues swallowing pills. The doc would like to try him on Wellbutrin XL, which is a small pill. I have tried now for two days and it continues to be a challenge. Any ideas on getting him to swallow the pill? Have even considered trying Wellbutrin XR which they say you can cut in half. What we started out doing was having our son fill his mouth half way with juice (whatever), tilt his head back and then I dropped the pill in and ds swallowed. It worked out really well and now ds has no problems. ilovemyboys39444.5942361111

We had this problem in our house too.  The thing that helped us was double stuffed Oreo cookies.  I would open up the cookie and put the pill inside near the edge and then give it to my son.  He ate the cookie and was able to swallow the pill that way.  The XR part of the medication might make things hard because the pill might not be able to be crushed.  Check with your doctor on that one.  We had to go the cookie route for about 1 year before he was able to swallow the pill on his own.

Good luck!  I feel your pain!

I used mini m&m's.  They are smaller than the regular ones.  My kids hate mint so tic tacs were out of the question.  Think about how you swallow and give him a blow by blow on what to do.  Don't pressure him to much or he'll just keep shutting down.   I'll have to look for that cup!  I'll just keep trying!! These are all great ideas!

we used orange tic tacs, lots of kids hate mint. M & M' are good actually because they are more the shape of a tablet........................I used tic tacs because they were harder to chew
