Hi there my name is Bridgette.  I am a 26year old mother of two boys.  They are 10years old and 8years old.  I need help.

When my 10year old was in 2nd grade they swore that he was adhd and that i needed to get him tested and get him on meds. (they being the school)well I never did the kids was getting excellent grades in school and i could not justify putting him on meds. He is still "Hyper" by all means but is doing excellent in school.

Now my youngest is in 2nd grade and is struggleing in school.  I have recently requested that the school test him for learning disabilities.  He tested average in ALL Areas and his IQ was scored at 94.  However we decided that it is in his best intrest to go ahead with extra treatment, becasue even though he tests average he is still way behind.  My problem is they are requesting that I might want to put him on medicine so that he can help to focus and concentrate more.  I was going back in forth on weather I should or should not try medicine.  I would like to try it short term and see if it helps him be able to learn.  What are your all suggestions?  He does not by no means have ADHD, the hyperactive part is not there, but he has attention well....his problem is he is constantly running with different thoughts.  He has trouble staying on task, and disifering (sp) his thoughts.

What do you all think?  Should I try meds or not.

thank you for your help

Bridgette

Personally, I would try it and see if it worked.  You can always stop at any time if it doesn't work or the side effects are too great.  If medication works, it can completely change the child's life for the better.  Just my 2 cents.  Lisa

He does not by no means have ADHD, the hyperactive part is not there, but he has attention well

The disorder is called AD/HD with 3 suptypes, that being, Inattentive, Hyperactive/Impulsive or a combination of all three. Are you saying that a diagnosis of ADHD was ruled out or are you saying he has AD/HD Inattentive type? If a diagnosis of AD/HD was ruled out, medication wont work. What I suggest you do is get a second opinion by an independant, qualified diagnostic team who are trained in the field of diagnosing childhood disorders. There are many reasons why a child cant stay on task or is highly distractly, including medical reasons like allergies so thats why its always good to get a second opinion and through a collaborate effort between you and the experts, you can make an informed decision in terms of what the best treatment plan is for your child.

I had a hard time with the medicine at first.  My doctor told me lets try it and if Matt doesn't have ADHD we would not see any improvements with the meds.  Within one day on meds I saw handwriting improvement, slower body movements and the ability to concentrate in school.  He started to like school, well maybe that is a strong word but he did enjoy going a lot more.  I have had to adjust his level of concerta a few times to make sure we stay at the right dose.  I did not tell the teachers the first week he started meds.  Right or wrong I wanted to see if they saw any changes without looking for them.  They called me on day two to state all the changes they were seeing at school.  MAtt is also on an ed plan that allows him to move around he needed to help him self regulate.

Try the meds- you will know quickly if it was the right choice for your child- know that there are different meds to try as well

GOOD-luck

Hello. I am a mother of two sons as well. My youngest has ADHD and he is bipolar. I suggest you go in the simplest route. Try the least dose available for a few weeks, barring that there are no side effects. Then go from there. Also ask your son to do something that he doesn't like doing, see how he consentrates. Make up your own mind on this. I have my son on a 5 yr olds dose of ridilen even though he's 15. But I don't have him take in on weekends or on school breaks because he is not a problem at home. That way he can also try to controll it on his own. I found this way he doesn't fight taking the meds.lilred38322.8962152778
