Im sorry i forget to mention her age duhh.  She is 17 and she is quite overweight but she does take two tablets a day.  So i dont know if this is classed as 80mg.  Thank you for replying.
IF she is taking 80 mgs a day right out of the box then it is harmful.Adults need to ramp also, and adult dose is not like a child's dose....not as weight dependent. Usually 100mgs.

Is there anything around you for support?  Is she still in school?  If so you can push for an IEP or 504 to help you and her.  Is it possible to change schools since your bad experiences?  It sounds like you both have a lot on your plates with what is going on and now a baby.  I wish you the best.  As for counseling it is worth a try if she is willing.

Perhaps you should search for a parent support group or network. They usually have a ton of resources and seminars, etc.

Are you in the UK?

I suggest  since your daughter is basically an adult you could help her by pointing out the differences the medication is making in her day-to-day life.  Sometimes the differences are suttle(but important) that only someone like a mother will notice the changes. Teach her how these improvements can help her in the future.  Also try not to dwell on the mistakes of the past as those cannot be changed, if you try to let it go it will be easier for her to make the necessary adjustments to improve her life (i.e. education, work or social life.)  If you can show her the positive side of the diagnosis and treatment then she will be less apt to rebel.

Good Luck!

Hi everone,Thank you for your replies my daughter has been on one tablet of strattera 40mg for a week but now on the second week she is taking two tablets a day of strattera 40mg.  Hope this clears things up.  This is all new to me so you will have to excuse me if i seem a little naive.  I am still a little bit upset about the diagnosis as well.  I knew she had behavioural problems and in the back of my mind i knew it was adhd, but to hear it said to you by a doctor is saddening as i thought it would be something she would just grow out of as she became an adult.  Would she have to be on this medication for life?

it depends on how she can get along. Not everyone chooses to use medications. She may learn so good coping skills as she matures and not always need meds. Once she is mature and can take care of herslef these are choices she'll make for herself.

Hi everyone

I am new on here.  My daughter has just recently been diagnosed with ADHD and she has been put on strattera 40mg.  I have been through hell with her for the last 4 years and it has taken this long to finally get somewhere but i do feel it is too little too late.  She has been on the medication for just over a week and she does seem calmer in herself but i do have concerns about the medication she is taking.  The school she has left has been absolutely rubbish.  She was excluded seven times, was caught shoplifting, smoking drinking and she got pregnant.  Just before finally going on medication she got an apprentice with the local council and she lost it because of a lack of concentration etc.  I feel if she had been put on medication earlier it may not have come to this.  As I said i had no support from the school and it has taken me three years on my own to get to this point where i have a diagnosis.  I have been through social workers, family support workers and i have to say they were no help at all.  I do feel really let down by the system.  And I also feel i have let my daughter down by maybe not fighting harder or supporting her enough.  She was just labeled as a bad egg by the school and they did not want to know.  The grades she left school with were appalling.  Anyway replies would be welcomed as this is kind of all new to me.  I have to go back to the psychiatrist on the 18th Jan.

Hi and welcome. It's never too late. She just needs more support now. You dont say how old or if she is still in school? A couple of things, she needs counseling along with the meds. Also, how much does she weigh? She is obviously in her teens and 40 mg doesnt sound like enough. My daughter is 13 and VERY thin and she is taking 54 mg. Her minimum dose would be 45.Im sorry i forget to mention her age duhh.  She is 17 and she is quite overweight but she does take two tablets a day.  So i dont know if this is classed as 80mg.  Thank you for replying. You need to know her exact dose per day. Strattera is weight dependant and there's a HUGE difference between 40 and 80 mg. Many doctors prescribe a low dose of Strat for the first week, then increase it. We parents often call this period of time "ramping". Is this what the doctor is doing?

Oh, and by the way... I agree with the others...It's not too late. It'll take time, but she will get better. Just be patient and persistent. Continue to show her your willingness to have mother-daughter talks. Try not to be overly critical, but offer your experience and guidance.

May you have a happy New Year!

Hi edbson

I live in England and i think it has only just had the black box warning put on it.  It has probablly been in the united states for a while, we are a little slower here.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your replies internet has been down so have been unable to reply until now.  I have been closely monitering my daughter since she has been on strattera and i have to say she does seem to be adjusting quite well to it.  She does seem calmer and also she does seem to be able to see other peoples points of view which she was unable to do before,  I am watching out for the depression as i have been made aware that they are going to put black box warnings on the packets because of a study where teenagers had more suicidal thoughts on them.  I keep asking her if she is okay and she says she is fine, in fact her emotions which were very up and down seem a lot more balanced which is good because we were walking on eggshells all the time in case she kicked off,  so all in all a positive effect the medication has had!

Strat has had a black box warning for quite some time. She would also need to be momnitored for Liver Enzymes, along with depression.
