Hyperactive without Attention Problems? | ADHD Information
sunpanda- that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard! The court system stinks. Your son needs help and your ex is obviously too unaware to see this. I hope all works out in your favor. Our son is this way too. Initially , we didn't understand the ADHD diagnosis, because he didn't have attention problems. As I like to say, it not that our son cannot pay attention, it's that he doesn't STOP paying attention.
After researching various types of ADHD, we discovered that there are many different TYPES of it. Our son is what they call OVER-FOCUSED ADHD. Kids with this type can often be described as the Rabbit in the story of Winnie the Pooh. As one author states about the rabbit... "Oh, he can get a lot of things done, and he's the one character who will be prepared when winter comes, but he has a very hard time shifting from one activity to another. He is absolutely 'task oriented' and is focused to whatever that task might be."
Does this remind you of your son? It may be this type of ADHD, which is a blessing in disguise. Take for instance...
He'll do well in school, but might need challenged more than other kids his age. He'll do well at home, but maybe domineering and pushy with family members by always wanting them to play with him and wanting others to do it HIS way. He'll do well in making friends, but they may think he's a little high strung. He'll do well as an adult, but might expect others to keep up with his high energy levels. He may become a business owner someday, but could push his employees too much by expecting the same high-goal spirit he'll have.
Studies have shown that this kind of ADHD can be difficult. Some of the issues may be...
May worry a LOT, even over things that don't really matter much.
Can be very oppositional to parents.
May like to argue.
May be somewhat compulsive about the way things ought to be done.
Will have a very hard time shifting from one activity to another.
Always wants to have his way.
Maybe your son has this type of ADHD, I don't know, but its worth doing more research on it.
Take care and God bless.

Do any of you have such a diagnosis? I haven't seen much of this. I had an evaluation done at my son's school as a preliminary to a doctor's visit, and it concluded that my son is definitely hyper, but doesn't show sign of being at risk for attention deficit.
A school eval is not a medical eval and does not conclude or diagnose anything. I have heard of kids being hyper before, and not necessarily having ADHD.It can go both ways, my DD has ADHD, and is NOT hyper. How old is your son? Sometimes the attentional issues aren't a problem until 4th or 5th grade so it's not as noticable early on. The school typically only looks at whether or not it's affecting his ability to learn. My son is almost 9 and in 3rd grade. He is VERY intelligent, which his teacher last year said is probably his only saving grace in school because he picks things up so quickly. When he does his work, he does it well, it is just getting him 'on task' to do it, then hoping he remembers to turn it in . I don't really think it is all Hyper because there are some other things like 'spacing out'. I have known for a couple of years that there has been a problem, I was just hoping he could 'grow out' of some of it, but he isn't. I realized it last year, but couldn't do anything because of a court-ordered injunction that prevented me from getting him any psychological help while his father & I were going thru a divorce... dumb, huh?
