Daytrana being discontinued? | ADHD Information

My son's doctor switched him to Daytrana 10 mg today, but when I went to get his prescription filled, nobody had it in stock.  Not even the "big name" pharmacies.  I was finally able to get it filled at my FIFTH stop at a small cross-town pharmacy.  BUT, what worries me is when I went to Walgreens they told me that they had it on order, but they had heard rumors that it was being discontinued so they may never get it back in stock!  There is nothing about this on the Daytrana website, but I'm concerned because it took me so long just to find a pharmacy that had any.  Has anyone else had issues with this or heard that it's being discontinued?I haven't heard a thing--I hope not!

Oh GOOD!  I've been thinking all day that it would be just my luck for this med to work really well for my son, then be discontinued.  Thanks so much for checking on it for me and passing along the info!  Maybe I should let the lady at Walgreens know as well so she won't give anyone else a heart attack too!

I spoke with a frind who is a Shire Rep and she says it is NOT being Discontinued. Most Pharmacies don't sell enough to keep alot on hand, so they are just out of it till you need it, then they order it. oooooh I have not heard that either. I hope not too, that is what we'll go back to if we lose success with Strattera. Thanks for the info Joejoesmom!  We are on our fourth day of Daytrana, and I must have gotten one of the "bad" boxes.  The backs are hard to get off without pulling some of the adhesive up with it, but if I mess with it for a little bit, I can get it.  I'll try your tip in the morning!  Not sure if we like Daytrana yet.  Actually, not sure if it's even working at all, but maybe it's because we're on such a low dose.  When he was on Vyvanse, he would "zone out" on things, and he would literally find one thing and do it ALL DAY and barely make a sound.  And the rebound was AWFUL.  It did seem to rob some of his personality as well.  With the Daytrana, he has every bit of his personality and his appetite (thank goodness to have that back), but is also a little "mouthy" now.  But we haven't seen any major meltdowns yet, so it must be helping some.  Does anyone know if you can put the Daytrana patch in a different location than the hip?  His doc recommended that we DON'T use the hip, but rather any place "below his nipples and above his thighs" that isn't a "fatty" part of the body.  So far, we've been  using the hip, because that's what the directions say, but I'm just wondering if anyone else uses alternate locations?I've found out a good way to get the backing off bad patches.  I got a box of 30 recently before I took my son on a trip to Canada.  I opened the box there and all the patches seemed bad but I couldn't call to get the replacement card.  I tried different things each day and found a good way to get backing off the worst patches.  Here is the little secret --- you rub the patch before trying to get the backing off.  Put it down on a counter and actually use the edge of your fingernail to rub on both sides of the patch.  Then hold it between your fingers and thumbs and just keep rubbing it.  Try to peel it off at the bend if it still won't come off keep rubbing.  I guarantee it works it may take a few minutes for each patch but it does work.  I have almost finished the entire box.  Any questions please ask.  Glad to hear it is not being discontinued.  I always go a few days early to the pharmacy and most of the time they have to order it in.  It usually takes 3 days to get it.  I am also going to ask my doctor to write each perscription separtely for 10 instead of the full 30.  That way if I get a bad box it's only 10 bad ones and not 30.  shire is NOT discontinuing Daytrana!  Recently there were more orders for it and a shortage at the factories but this should be taken care of by now.I'm not sure about all of this discontinuing and continuing. But for Sabrinas
mom you might want to try Vyvanse, my daughter takes that and she is
doing well on it. My son was on Daytrana for almost a year but the rebound
was killing us. We switched to Concerta, it wasn't doing the trick entirely so
we added Tenex in at night just a half pill around 5 p.m. It helps us get the
homework done and we are going to be trying to add that in during the
morning too and then our doc. wants to try dropping the stim. eventually.
My son's problems are not as much about focus as they are about behavior
problems. So you might want to research at least the switch to Vyvanse. you can always try the 15 and if it's too much go back to the 10. You'll know right away.My son was too quiet on the Vyvanse.  When we found a dosage level that would last all day, he was like a zombie.  And I'm not sure if we need to up his dose on the Daytrana or not.  He's on 10mg, and he has ALL of his appetite and personality back, which is a GREAT thing.  But I sometimes wonder if the medication is working at all.  He seems to have a little more control over his anger and tantrums, and had a great week at school, but there is still that impulsive behavior that rears it's angry head every now and then.  I am glad that there are virtually NO side effects (other than pink skin under the patch), but I'm wondering if he needs to go up to the 15mg at his next refill?  I don't want him to be TOO medicated that he's a zombie again, but it just seems like he might need a little more than what he's getting.  It is good to have my son back since we stopped the Vyvanse though!

We just started Daytrana thursday (10 mgs) which seems enough for her.  We were on 30mgs of Vyvanse but she was a ZOMBIE; I hated it. We cut her dose to 15mgs and still the same. She was just not herself. Too quiet and withdrawn. I'm hoping she tolerates Daytrana better. We'll see

Thanks for the tip about the patch.

I hope they don't ever take away Daytrana. My son is on 20mg and is finally getting some weight back on him. We have tried Adderrall, Vyvanse, and Strattera. Finally we have something that isn't making him lose weight. It holds out pretty well during the day..not so much at night but it doesn't matter because he is getting ten times better with his behavior
I wish you luck with the patch!  We love it.  NO rebound at all so far, no tummy aches, no constipation, no weight loss.  The only little side effect is the redness at the end of the day where the patch is, which is mostly gone by the next morning.  Hope it works for you too!
My son gets that too. He broke out a couple of times in a rash. His doctor told me to put Vaseline, cortisone cream, or even olive oil on it at night and so far that has really helped.
You can call the pharmacy a few days before you want to go pick it up.  They'll order it for you so it's ready when you need it.We were advised during the med trials not ONLY apply it to the hip, or the bum, not anywhere else. it needs the fatty part for the meds to work properly. thank for the replyies. after reading hundreds of these posts regarding the patch we have decided to give it a try. the current metadate is working quite well but my dd doesn't like taking it- says it affects her "tummy". the underdosing affecting rebound intencity was interesting- I would think just the opposite-- more intense rebound on higher dose. I'll keep you all posted on patch results. I wish you luck with the patch!  We love it.  NO rebound at all so far, no tummy aches, no constipation, no weight loss.  The only little side effect is the redness at the end of the day where the patch is, which is mostly gone by the next morning.  Hope it works for you too!Anyone heard of putting on patch at bedtime? A pharmasict told me a customer did it that way with good results-- no sleep issues. You know it will be in ther3 system when they wake up but I'd be worried about there quality of sleep. Directions don't say not to do this. We are thinking of trying patch for first time as alternate for metadate-- having slight stomach issues and some insomnia issues. We give it to dd school days only. supposedly packaging issues and such have been resolved after so many complaints. I've never heard of anyone putting it on at bedtime.  I personally wouldn't do it because of the skin irritation after it was on all night and then all day.  It is normal for the skin under the patch to turn reddish pink after the 9 hours, but not sure what it would do if it was on for much longer than that.  My son has worn his for 12 before (we forgot to take it off on time) and he was fine though.  I have and do put the patch on my son about an hour before he wakes up, so by the time he gets on the school bus the meds have kicked in.  We also have not experienced ANY side effects from the patch like we did when he was on the Vyvanse.  He has his full appetite back and no sleep issues at all unless we forget to remove the patch by 6:00 PM...then he has a little trouble falling asleep, but nothing too troublesome.  He also has his personality back.  He was a zombie on the Vyvanse.  For a while I was wondering if the Daytrana was even working at all, but since he has been almost two months without any reported behavior problems at school, it must be doing something for him!why would you put it on at bedtime. It's a 12 hour med. Stays on for 9 then works for three. If you put it on at bedtime the med would be wearing off during the day. Are you sure he didnt meant o put it on while the child was till in bed. Meaning early in the morning before waking? I wouldnt do this. I did, however, put it on DD while she was still sleeping to try to help our mornings.

You can put it on while the child is STILL asleep, but not at bedtime, it would have worn off by morning and they patch is not supposed to be worn longer than 12 hours.

during the Daytrana med trials they did have DD wear it for 24 hours straight, with  VERY adverse skin reactions.

I work for Walgreens.  I have not heard that the Daytrana patch is being discontinued, but I will check into it next time I am at work.  I have to pay cash for it, so I have also shopped around.  I have found the same thing if there is no one buying the patch at that Rx, they will not have it on hand.  Walgreens always has had it for me.

I wish my Walgreens would stock it because they are the nearest Rx to my home.  I have asked them to stock it, but they still don't have it when I call and they tell me it will take them two to three WEEKS to get it in.  But I'm happy going across town to the little Rx that carries it for me.  It only takes about 10 minutes there, in and out, where at Walgreens I'm always there for at least an hour.  Sure, it's farther to drive, but the overall trip is shorter!  Hmmm...my Walgreens used to be great, but I think they changed management or something a few months ago, because the place has been going downhill lately.

I'm happy to report that my son is doing just wonderful on the Daytrana 10 mg patch, and the Rx I'm using now said they have no reason to believe it's being discontinued. Thank goodness!!!

My son was on the patch from last March until two weeks ago.  I had troubles getting the patch too.  You have to get the perscription before you run out and then drop it off a few days in advance.  At least that's what I found I did find that CVS pharmacy carried the boxes of 30 but then when I got a bad box the whole thing would be bad.  So I asked our doctor to give three separate prescriptions for 10 each.  I know she found it a pain to write out so many but at least then if you get a bad box or at least I mean a box that is difficult you only have 10 to use up.  The last box I got was 30 and they were so difficult.  I didn't phone them to get the card because I was going out of the country and had to take the lousy box with us.  The entire box was very difficult and I didn't think that my son was getting a good dose.  Some pharmacies take a full week to get them in.  I skipped giving it to my son on weekends and gave him a 5 mg ritalin pill instead.  That meant I had extra patches so when I got the prescrition I still had a few days worth of patches left.  It was a pain the entire time we had them.  Then we were switched to Concerta and I had to go to 3 pharmacies before I found anyone who had it in.  Rite Aid told me if I get it all the time they could order it in advance but then when I tried to do that the person who told me that was out for a few days and for some stupid reason she was the only one who could order.  It's all a big pain I think no matter what you take.  I have actually applied it to my son's back and it worked there also but he didn't like the itch there as he couldn't get to it.  We are sticking with the hip but I'm looking into other meds lately becasue he's been so quiet, way too quiet. MY dd has been on Daytrana since it's first conception practically ( about 2 yrs now ) and let me tell you ...it is a LIFE saver.  She is 8 and ADHD, ODD, and Bipolar.   It helps keep all symptoms in check.  If we receive a bad box, I found that putting it in the freezer, for about 5 -6 mins helps, then I am able to peel off back with a pearing knife.  I put it on at 6am while she is still sleeping, my daughter gets up at 7am, and by school time is is working fine.  We put it on her back, not hip, it works just fine there.  We keep it on from 6am until 8pm at night since she is in so many activites. But yesterday when I picked up the new box, our pharmacist did give us CONFIRMATION from the company themselves that they will be discontinuing it soon.  I am in a total state of panic.  My daughter was diagnosed when she was 4, and she was on Focalin, which of course is part Ritalin, like Daytrana is pure Ritalin, which helped tremendously.  But our problem was that she was so tiny and needed to be on a larger dose so we switched.  Her older half brother is on Concerta, but it does nothing for her.  We were on Adderall 20mg XR for several years, but she developed bad acid reflux (not really from the adderall but a family history of it and the medicine).  So I have no idea what we will do since the Daytrana is a life saver here.  I suppose we could try the new Focalin XR, but hopefully the patch will last thru the summer so can do the changes then, I hate to see her slip in school.  But since we have been on strictly Adderall and Daytrana, I do not know what is out there anymore.  We have done the statera(sp) so I guess it is research time .  PS she is on 20mg Daytrana, and is FINALLY at a healthy weight, even though she still wears slim sized jeans sometimes.

Shire is not disontinuing the Daytrana, but your pharmacy may be disconinuting it. I spoke with a Shire rep yesterday at work, and they know nothing about it. I also spoke with the leader of the med trials that DD was in, she said ALOT of Pharmacies are not going to carry it, because they cannot sell it, but Shire will continue to manufacture it.

By keeping the patch on for 14 hours, she is wearing it for 2 hours with no meds, it only releases for 12 hours.
