how much is too much? | ADHD Information

I agree with Diane, A psychiatrist is mandatory when delaing with something like this especially if there is bipolar in the mix. Get tested and get a psych. My son is 8 and has been diagnosed with ADHD when he was in kidnergarden. We have tried different meds some have worked some haven't. Adderall xr made him extermly violent and agressive but in the same time made him sad and emotional. now he is on concertta 72mg and Straterra 40mg then he takes 1 1/2 clonodine .1mg at night to help him sleep. These meds seem to work really good but are copletely worn off by the afternoon. The Dr. now wants to add Rittalin for him to take after school. I haven't wanted to give it to him for I feel that is just to much for a 8yr old child to be taking. I also watched the show on PBS the other night and was shocked to see he also has shown symptoms of bipolar (which the dr. has said once before when he first was seen) He is verry smart, all A honor roll, almost photographic memory, and has always been like that. He wakes up every morning with a smile on his face he just is so "happy" all the time that he is non stop until he was put on meds. I like the fact that he is not a zombie on any of these meds either. The meds just help him slow down and focus on one thing at a time. His aunt also has bipolar. should I really consider taking him to a psyciatrist instead of our family peditriton? If any one could answer on any of my questions it would be very helpful..I also thank you now for any input. You absolutely should see a psychiatrist. Bipolar or no bipolar. A psychiatrist is just more experienced with meds.
