hi my 6 year son as today been diagnoised with ADHD and Aspeger Syndrome he on meds Equasym 10 mg. Im confussed and don't no what to next with regards school, benefits, help thats available. If anyone could help me then please do.
Well, the first thing is that you are not alone! I would encourage you to get educated about the topics and keep hanging out here.....there are a lot of people who know what it is like and are willing to support you, answer questions, etc... What sort of symptoms was he having that made you get help?

hi, theres always been something there, he is on the go all the time, fussy with his eating etc, he cant keep friends because he plays to boistrus (mind the spelling), the list is endless. His behaviour was bad at school and i just had enough so i got him referred and today we got the dignoises i just throught it were ADHD, when she said that he had Aspeger syndrome but to realise he had both was a big shock. Now im confused because im not sure what AS is. Im not sure on the benefits i can claim or anything.
That does sound like a lot to process all at once! It never seems to go slow and easy, does it?
My cousin's daughter has AS, and after learning about that I can really see it in my family - my brother in particular I'm sure has it, but as an adult now, there's not much I can do but love him as usual.
I would echo twirly1 in saying there's a lot of info out there and I know for me reading and reflecting is an important part of figuring out where I fit into the picture. Can I get inside my dd's (or my brother's) brain? can I get a better sense of what makes them tick? I think "common knowledge" on both topics is often misguided - I know I had my own ideas which I learned didn't fit. So try to sort out what does fit - remember your goal isn't to become a doctor or a PhD but to better parent the child you already adore!
My cousin's dd gets a lot of services from school for her AS which help a ton. So much can be learned - eye contact, social skills stuff like how long to talk, when to pause for others to speak. There's a lot of great info now for working with this.
There's a lot on your plate right now, no question! But with knowledge comes power and hope, I think! You've just gotten some great insight into your child, and now you slowly learn how to turn that into tools for making things change - in hard ways, no question, but good ways too.
Don't forget this is still your baby! Don't judge him by other people's ideas of normal, never forget that he's special and wonderful and his very own self. Be proud of him! (I have to remind myself of this more than I wish I did.)
Hi Danielle,
I have a 14 yr old with adhd and AS. Welcome to the club. It is an interesting journey. First off, have your child given an edu. eval to determine his strengths and weaknesses. I'm inclding a couple of sites for you to visit. Now is the time to start your research and learning as much as you can about both disorders. This isn't the end of the world. It is the beginning of an adventure. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Aww thankyou all for you replies, its really nice to know that were not on our own, n theres others like my son, i will go on them sites and see if this helps me any. Will school help him more now hes been dignoised? they mentioned something bout asking "senco" what to do, whats this mean. thanks again
You would need to have him evaluated by the Special ed department at his school. Write a formal letter asking for an evaluation and send it to the special ed director. ok then, what do i put into the letter? request a full academic evaluation. Include your concerns, teachers concerns that have been brought to you and your diagnosis.
Ok i will do that, thanks everyone. Is there anything else i can be doing? what is equasym for is that for his ADHD?yes it is methylphedinate, the same medication as Ritalin.yes i have heard of that, i hope it works for my son. its his first tablet in the morning so fingers crossed
