I guess I am fortunate with Tomas. He does not give me any problems taking it. I empty the capsule into a cup and mix it with juice. He says he can't taste it so it works. The way we do it is I buy the juice boxes and mix a whole box of juice with the powder and mix it very good and then he drinks it through a straw making sure he gets all of the powder.
The side-effects that I am having problems with is the rebounding that I have been reading about. The medicine starts to wear off around 4-5 in the afternoon and that is when his mood starts changing. He becomes very easily angered and frustrated about very minor things that otherwise would not effect him.
DIANE- HE HAS NOT TAKEN AT SCHOOL YET AS WE'VE HAD A LONG WEEKEND THANK GOODNESS GIVING HIM SOME TIME TO LET IT SINK IN. HE JUST COMMITED TO 1 MONTH IN EXCHANGE FOR A NOT TOO EXPENSIVE TOY HE WANTS. I SAID YES. IF HE GOES 1 MONTH I WILL BE HAPPY AND THE SIDE EFFECTS WILL BE BETTER AND HOPEFULLY THE EATING AS WELL. HE IS DOING FANTASTIC AND FOCUS IS BETTER SO TOMMOROW IS SCHOOL WE WILL SEE.....I AM SO HAPPY HE IS DOING THIS I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!
Ryan has been on Vyvanse since November. His side effects in the beginning were that he was very lethargic, almost sleeping, and he did have a stomach ache for a few days. Also his appetite was not good. He did have some rebound but not as bad as I had seen when he was on adderrall. WE started him on the weekend so by Monday he was getting use to it. The tired feeling and appetite and were gone by the end of the first week, as was the stomach ache. The rebound took a bit longer but as long as we stay calm during the time it wears off its pretty good now.
The good part is his focus at school is much better, he is doing much more independent work, and it lasts past homework time. The teacher told me he needs much less redirection and I notice that at home also. He is on 30mg which is the lowest dose.
It def takes a 2 weeks at the least to really give this medicine a chance. I also dont recommend not giving it to him on weekends, or days off. It would be like starting over again with the side effects.
His appetite is about the same as it was with all his other Stims. Hungry in the morning, not so hungry in the afternoon and ravenouse from 6 to bedtime.
I wish you ladies much luck and hope this works out for you!
Spamula! So glad he is taking the meds for you!
HELLO TO BOTH OF YOU AND THANK YOU FOR RESPNDING TO MY OST . MY SON HAS BEEN REFUSING MEDS FOR MONTHS BUT NOE IT HAS BEEN 4 DAYS AND HE IS NOT ARGUEING HARDLY. I WELCOME YOU HERE AND ALTHOUGH NONE OF MY FRIENDS HAVE POSTED YOU GALS HAVE AND I APPRECIATE IT COMPLETELY TALIKING WITH SOMEONE GOING THROUGH THE SAME THING. ANYTHING I CANDO TO HELP EITHER OF YOU I WOULD BE HAPPY TO.spamula, how has he done with school since starting the Vycanse? Or has he not taken it for school yet? You must be so proud of him!Spamula you found a good way to let him be in charge.. What is it about these ADHD kids that they are such control freaks! Good for you! I hope he sticks it out and it is the right med.IT HAS ONLY BEEN A WEEK AND WE ARE HAVING A LITTLE TROUBLE WITH REBOUND, SLEEP IS DEFINATLY AN ISSUE. BUT I JUST STARTED NOTICING POSSIBLE FACIAL TICS BUT ONLY AT BED BEFORE SLEEP. THIS I DON'T LIKE. HE IS STARTING TO EAT MUCH MORE WHICH IS GOOD, HYPER PART IS STILL THERE BARELY, BUT SCHOOL MIGHT HAVE TO WAIT FOR BEHAIVIOR CHANGE TILL NEXT WEEK IF WE MAKE IT THAT LONG(TICS). THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT.
did he have tics with the Focalin? the ticcing after meds wearing off may be part of the rebound he's feeling............hmmmmmmm.....tough one.......it's only been a week like you said and it seems most people with this med say it takes a few. My daughter gets tics and I've noticed they are always worse when first on a med, then they tend to lessen somewhat.
My sons tics were minor and came and went. They seemed to get worse when we pointed them out. He is also more edgy on meds. Have you thought about adding P/S. it seems to make my boys more sunny... Maybe another pill would not work right now. One trick I found for the snappy edginess is the "do over".THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. THE TICING IS SO MINOR THAT I WANT TO KEEP GOING BUT NOT IF IT GETS WORSE. I HOPE THIS WILL GO AWAY OVER TIME LIKE I SAID IT HAS BEEN ONLY 1 WEEK AND IT TAKES LONGER TO SEE FULL RESULTS. YES HE DID THE SAME THING ON FOCALIN WHEN GOING TO SLEEP.
WE HAVE SOME ANGER ISSUES NOW THAT WERE THERE BUT NOT AS BAD AS NOW. HE GETS VERY UPSET WHEN THING DON'T GO HIS WAY NOW.
WE DO HAVE A DOC APPT IN 2 WEEKS SO WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
I have been tryig to do the "do overs" with my 5 year old..........now when she talks fresh, I just look at her and she says (VERY DIRECTLY) "And I am NOT going to do a do over".........
...........isn't she a joy!
i MIGHT HAVE TO TRY THIS DO OVER THING ALTHOUGH HE IS A CONTROL FREAK ALL THE WAY! I AM NOW NOTICING ALOT OF EYE BLINKING THIS MORNING. ARGH! I DON'T LIKE THIS.Dianne: Oh dear time out!
oh yeah, she spends LOTS of time in her room "regrouping" and rememebring how to talk nice...............I would just say OK, no do over, then in your room...............
Spamula, BL Moretti is right, most people didnt notice when my daughters tics were mild eye blinking. I did, she did, but most others did not...............
Good lcuk. I'm happy for you guys, I know how patient you've been. It's paid off! Good for you, and him, but especially you.I'm glad he took it! Sounds like he's getting the bug his friend had.
We started Vyvanse this morning too and I must say, it was NOT a good day for Will. But we got snow today, first time in 6 years, so I don't think it was the best day to judge. I'm hoping tomorrow is better!
My dr didn't mention that at all..
He has been somewhat better yesterday but not much. I'm interested in seeing how he does at school Tuesday.
I will say one thing though, he's been an eating machine!
My Tomas has been taking VyVanse 30mg and it is definately working for him at school. BUTTTT it is the side-effects that he is having from it that I am not liking at all. We are 1/2 way through his 2nd month on it and I don't think I like what it is doing to him. He is also having good side-effects which is making it even harder to decide what I need to do. He was overweight when he started this medicine 6 weeks ago and as of last Monday he had lost 11 lbs. since being on the meds.
I'm sorry I know I am bouncing around here I just have so much to say and so many questions. I just found this web-site today so I will keep reading for now and see what I can find.
Will has had a better day today, maybe it was the snow that threw him off yesterday. But we're really not doing anything today, so I'm unsure.
Hismom,
What side effects are you seeing?
Will had a tummy ache this morning but I don't know if it's related. He only mentioned it because I asked him how he felt taking this new med. He doesn't like it, but that's because he doesn't like ANY change. I mixed it in with water instead of sprinkling it in his mouth, like I did the Focalin. He hasn't mentioned anything since then.
Hismom,
I forgot to say Welcome! I love to read this board when I'm having a challenging day with Will.
Yeah!
I'm so excited for you! Is he getting a reward for trying it for the three weeks? I'd say a trip to the movies or a new pack of baseball cards might be in order.
I guess you're right. I'll give him anything he wants if he mentions it again.
Have you noticed it taking 2 hours to kick in? That's what our dr said but we don't have 2 hours in the morning before school starts.. He's crannky if he gets up early so we only get him up in time to get ready and out the door.
UGH!
How is he today?
Will is again, TERRIBLE! He's not having any side effects, he just acts like he's not taken any meds at all!
He's taking 30 mg. Does that seem high enough? He's 8.5, weighs 46 lbs and metabolizes fast!
