My daughter has ADHD and bipolar so she is on several meds. but as for treating her ADHD we tried every medication we could for her age limit and she had ticks with every single one of them accept Dexadrine all the other's would make her right side of her face jerk up and down, her jaw move back and forth, and she was really out of it plus she would shake really bad. But with the Dexadrine she has done wonderful.
I guess what I am trying to say is every med. will effect them different even if they are in the same family you just have to keep trying until you can find the right one. I hated it at the time but in the long run it was very well worth it, it really helped out alot.
Definitely true, changing meds is no fun, be in the end so worth it, we will see what the doc says.........
Tenex supposed to help with hyperactivity, impulsiveness, anxiety, irritability, anger issues and tic control. Some people use it alone and other use it in conjunction with a stimulant. We are using it with Concerta. If it works, it would be nice to reduce the stimulant.
It takes a little while to build up, so far I haven't noticed a huge difference in her tics. She is a little more manageable in the evenings and is handling disappointment much better - but I'm not sure if this is the Tenex, the concerta or lots of basketball practices. All combined, things are going pretty well right now.
Clonidine is a similar medication that people use like tenex. It is more sedating and many people use it to help the kids sleep.

Thanks for the info,I too like to bein thedriver's seat also as my son will be going to the Doctor onThursday. I didforget to mention that he does also take Clonidine at bedtime to help him relax. Maybe we should try Tenex again? He took it alone without other meds before but it made him tired during the day and with school that is hard, he is in second grade.

I've heard of Tenex & Catapres from these boards, do these meds lessen the tics? Are they usually taken along w/the stim or instead of it? I'm just trying to get as much info as I can so when I call our ped, I can be the one in the "driver's seat", knowledge is power!Tenex supposed to help with hyperactivity, impulsiveness, anxiety, irritability, anger issues and tic control. Have not been on these boards in awhile, thankfully all has been well........until........Wondering while on the subject of tics has anyone had this happen? My son is 7 has had minor tics in the past with adderall(sp) and has now been on concerta 27mg for two years now. He just recently in the last two weeks developed a tic with blinking his eyes similar to what everyone else is describing in their posts and a strange tic with making noises with his throat. Anyone else experiene this? What I find odd is their has not been any change in his meds or anything?
My daughter's tics were worse on Focalin XR than they were on Ritalin LA. While she was on the Ritalin LA, they would come and go.I found another thread about Tic's but had more questions. We recently increased our son's Daytrana patch to 15mg from 10mg per our Ped (we actually requested a med change & he preferred to just increase--can't wait for our psych appt to have someone else handle the meds. Anyway---). He developed this eye tic when we started stim's, nothing really bad, just blinking a lot and adjusting his eyes. Now with the increase in dosage, it seems to have gotten worse, eyes sometimes stray to one side w/o his control, which DH & I are not liking at all. Even tho I don't think he even realizes he's doing it, it seems that he really has trouble keeping his eyes in one place.
Is it possible that the tic will stop by just changing to another med within the same med family? Or is it usually just overall stim's that cause this? These are all questions that will be addressed w/our psych once we meet, but that's not for another 2 wks so I want to have my ducks in a row when I call the ped to request--no demand a med change.
yes it is possible it will go away with a different stim. For us, it did not go away and we had to stop stims, but everyone is different.Hi,
When my son was taking Wellbutrin and Ritalin LA he had a very similar tic. My husband and I felt so bad. It did not seem to bother him but I worried about kids teasing him. His doctor did not want to treat the tic unless it was noise tic. We stopped the Wellbutrin and the tic went away and has not returned. We have even upped the Ritalin LA since then and tics have not returned. So, it could be the medication. Good luck.
