DD: ’I can still be good’ | ADHD Information

My son said this at first too, but after talking about it several times he understands that the meds help his brain slow down so he can think about the choices he makes.  It really is hard to impress upon them that the meds don't make them good since they can clearly see that when they take their pill they don't get in trouble as often as when they don't take it.  The other day I almost forgot to give my dd her meds. She said, 'That's
okay, Mom. I can still be good.' Poor kid. I had to explain it was med to
help her focus and concentrate, not to "be good." She's only 6, and a smart
kid. She takes her pills willingly and is doing fine. Just thought it was a
heart wrenching comment.

I know what you mean. Our son also had a moment when he was first dx 2 yrs aog and thought ADHD made him "bad". But after a few talks he now understands what it means. We told him what you told your dd and he's fine with it.

awwwww that sweet little girl!   That is a huge reason we decided to use medication. I WILL not have my child thinking he is *Bad* or *always in trouble* for things he can not help. His self esteem is the most important thing in the world to me and I wanted to do everything in my power for him to grow to his full potential and know what a great person he is.

(((HUGS))) to you ChinaMom and your DD as well!
