My son is 5 and in Kindergarten. He was diagnosed in Sept. with ADHD combined type. I think he has may have undiagnosed sensory and maybe anxiety issues, possibly OCD too. Maybe this is part of his ADHD, I just don't know. His psychiatrist is aware, but I decided to hold off a little longer before pursuing it. Mainly because I don't think it's severe enough to add another med.
As some of you know, he has been quite the chewer, shirts, pencils, his pinkies, even scissors. We bought him the chewy tubes (thanks Diane V.) and it has helped him tremendously at school. He also seems to have a physical need to touch, and some issues with sound. He will cover his ears if something is too noisy. There are 2 times during the day where he wants silence and doesn't want to be spoken too. These are also the times his meds are wearing off, so I wonder if that is the reason.
My baby girl had her first visit with an OT today, she has a whole other issue, low muscle tone. I told the OT about my son, and she had a flood of ideas for me. I am grateful she was sooo helpful. She said it was my right to request an OT eval. for my son at school. They do have an OT that works with kids there.
My question is this, do you think he has needs that are special enough to warrant this? Or is it typical ADHD behaviors? Thanks.
cali123439470.9889351852a psychiatrist won't diagnose SID only an OT.
Have you read Carol Kranowitz, The Out of Sync Child? VERY good.
I have not read it, but I have heard good things about it. I will see if my library has it, ThanksCali, his "isssues" are for sure sensory related. Yes you can request a school OT eval. Now what will come of it? They are going to want to know how it is affecting school. That's ALL they care about. They will only offer services if it helps their school environment. If he does have SPD, and can show it affects his school day, they will put him on a sensory diet and it will work wonders. Another option is go for the private OT eval, then approach the school. He hasn't been diagnosed with any Sensory issues yet from his psychiatrist, would that be necessary? Or would the school's OT to that? Right now thinkgs are going so good for him, but we have our ups and downs. Right now we are definitely up, but I was asking because if we decide to pursue this, I realize it can take some time. Honestly, that chewy tube is helping sooo much! I'm so glad we got some
