Accidents Caused by Hyperactivity | ADHD Information

My son fell out of his chair at school this morning and hit his head - I got the call at 9:30.  His doctor has recommended for him to have an exercise ball instead of a regular chair, and his school rejected that idea and said he could have a wiggle chair, but because we haven't completed the IEP process yet they refuse to give it to him.  Lovely, huh?

Has anyone had a child who badly injured his or herself because of their hyperactivity? If so, could you share how?No major injuries, just tons of minor ones. One of the things that family,
friends, and teachers noticed about my son after he started meds is that all
of the bruises were gone! Before, he would walk into trees, buildings, parked
cars, trash cans.. you name it. He fell out of the car at least twice a week,
and I mean face first. He had a way of sending part of his body dashing one
way, and another part tearing off the other way... it had to be seen to be
believed. He bit his tongue and drew blood a few times, bit his thumb more
than once (jumping and sucking), and he is the only child that I have known
to have hurt himself playing Monopoly. Twice. He is seven now, and I will not
let him cross a street or even a parking lot without me right there. He just
will not stop and look both ways. Traffic is my biggest fear with him.

YES, not from hyperactivity, but impulsiveness, they know our names at the ER on sight!

DD thinks nothing of umm...lets see, jumping out of trees, running with scissors at school( that got 5 stitches to her abdomen), went down a slide headfirst and cut her forehead, "flew" off the playground equipment at schoolwhile pretending to be a "power puff girl"you name it, she has done it, had it stitched or broken it. We have also had the "normal "injuries, softball to the head, chin, eye, lip, nose. She even broke her thumb in kindergarten by sitting on it.....she kept taking off the cast.

We have rules though, she is NOT allowed to ride her bike without a helmet, or rollerblade without pads and helmet. NO motorized vehicles, 4 wheelers, go carts etc( OMG that would be bad). No climbing on the roof, or in trees, and she is probably the only kid on the planet, or at least her school who is not allowed to put the wheels in her Heeleys.

and I wonder why I have gray hairs?

Great prayer.  Thanks for sharing.

My daughter has had her fair share of injuries but none have required a trip to the ER...
Thank you all for sharing your stories on how your child has hurt themselves due to their ADHD. This aspect of ADHD has worried me the most. My son (Jacob) also has had his moments of falling down the steps because he was running, getting rug burns, or hitting his head against the wall. Life you, my wife and I also have had our chins hit because ds jumped up without notice.

As some people think its normal for kids to get hurt, we parents of ADHD kids know that our child's bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes and brakes goes beyond the norm. We know in our hearts that our fears are justified. We fear that our child might be seriously hurt because of something they have no control over...something that's not their fault. That's my fear.

I know that some moms and dads on this forum are people of faith. For you, here's a prayer that I found on the internet that brings peace to my worried soul...

Heavenly Father,

I come to you with the assurance that you have a special love and concern for our children who struggle with something they don't deserve.

You know the anxieties within me concerning my little one. But from Your Word, I'm assured that you love my child more than I do, and hence I commit him/her into Your loving and protecting hands. Keep him/her safe from all evil. Protect them from themselves, and from others who don't understand their battle.

Lord, sometimes I'm tormented by guilt for leaving my child in someone else's care. But You know my situation. Please help my child's caregivers provide the kind of love, attention, and care that you would have them do for my little one.

Please keep him/her under your mighty wings and protect him/her from any kind of harm from those who would be cruel, overly demanding, or unwilling to understand my boy/girl. Let your precious blood cover all our children at all times.

Grant my child excellent health, provide the best treatment they can receive, and help him/her to grow in your knowledge. Give my child's medical caregiver the wisdom, time, and special love to truly provide the best help for my boy/girl. Help me to be patient, understanding, and persistent with my child. Help me to raise my boy/girl into a person who values themselves and others.

I thank you, Father, for listening to my innermost cries and for sending your angels to keep guard over my little one(s). Thank you for the peace you have given me!

In Jesus' precious name, I pray.

Amen.
Now that is a prayer!  I will be printing that out and putting it in the back of my bible.  Thanks so much for sharing that!  What a beautiful prayer. Thank you for sharing that. Sums up my feelings
exactly!

As far as accidents go...at age 2, dd pulled down a heavy stocking holder
from the mantel. Candles and garland went flying. She sustained 4 stitches.
The next summer she ran out of her room and headlong into a door frame.
Another 4 stitches. At age 4, she broke her collar bone when she fell
dancing with her sister. So far, that's it. She still makes me nervous when
she gets out of the car. I am so afraid she is going to dart into the parking
lot and get hit. I rarely hold her hand...I have to grip her wrist. Wears a
person down, doesn't it? I forgot all about the injuries to me... (besides the broken tailbone at
birth, which I am reminded of constantly). He never got the hang of
walking next to me holding hands... he would twist and pull and dash
across my path suddenly so I would trip over him. Once when he was two
we were walking and he crouched down because he saw a bug. I like a
good bug as much as the next person, so I crouched down over him, and
he suddenly sprung up right into my chin, and knocked me silly. Luckily
our neighbor was right there, because I was out of it for a minute and
really did see the little stars you hear about.
Now he tries to hurt me on purpose, hitting and biting and throwing
things, but he did a lot more damage from being impulsive than from
being angry. So far.

No serious injuries yet for HIM, but he broke his first window at age 2 throwing a rock. The kid has a wicked arm and fantastic aim, so I'm hoping it will pay off someday with a baseball scholarship.

Oh, but I have been hurt SEVERAL times having things thrown AT ME. I'm especially fond of the shoes (or heavy boots!) thown at my head while I'm tooling down the expressway. (Somebody should PROBABLY raise my insurance rates when he's in the car...)

Mine's not yet four, so I'm sure we're in for more exciting adventures in the years to come...

CrazyMadsMom39473.5497800926I used to say child protection may be here when she did something stupid so I always kept her diagnosis paperwork handy in case.  Nothing ever happened serious nor anyone coming over and the funny part is I am now a CPS worker.  I also work Preventative to help preserve the family and when someone just says ADHD to me they  have my full understanding I think myself living with a child of special needs I am a better worker for I have heart. Oh, My God, yes.  Besides adhd, my kid has asperger's syndrome.  On top of his impulsivity, he has no inate sense of danger.  Danger had to be taught.  We have had him open car doors while the car was going 60 mph.[got out of car seat] ,walked off the top of the monkey bars, walked underwater [not knowing how to swim], started fires, ate obnoxious and poisonous stuff...you name it.... He is now 14, and things are much much better.....
