jahayley: I do have one suggestion, speaking from experience, if meds for ADHD are something that you are open to or even thinking about, you may want to consider inquiring about an appt with a child psychiatrist as well. Here was our situation: we first started with a ped Doc and after about a month of dealing w/him & being unhappy with how he was handling things, we finally set up an appt with a child psychologist. That appt was over a month out. I consulted w/the pshychologist's receptionist, asking about meds (because our 5yr DS was already on meds & we also wanted someone else like a child psychiatrist to manage them, rather than the ped) and we were told that the psychologist we were meeting with worked very closely with a child psychiatrist so meds wouldn't be a problem, however she did not recommend making that appt also. Our very anxiously awaited appt the the child psychologist came & to our disappointment, we had to schedule the appt with the psychiatrist, which was another 3 wks away! All of the waiting & floating along that we feel like we had done already and now we have to wait 3 more weeks for someone else to possibly change his meds! I guess what I'm saying is that if both appts can be scheduled relatively close to the same time, you may get a better handle on the situation quicker.
Psychologists cannot prescribe meds, but rather help more with behavioral modification. Psychiatrists monitor the meds. We are still waiting for our first psychiatrist appt, so we don't have the full picture yet, but am anxious to see where it takes us. Everything involved with this disability is overwhelming at times, read as much as you can & check out these boards often, they are helpful. Good luck!
Our daughters must be twins for she has Asthma and allergies all year round but luckily she goes to bed for us the latest she has kept us up was 12 midnight and 11 pm for my child it goes in stages when it hits it lasts for a week then she is better. If your child continues to lose sleep I would address this with the doctor and see what they recommend do not give your child anything without consulting your doctor.BOY JAYHAYLEY Do you have your hands full! The poor kid all those meds. Poor MOM! Is she in any kind of therapy? You need some help figuring out a behavior plan. Behavior plans for ODD kids is so much more difficult.
Hey, vent away!!
My son can be extremely demanding, too. The key is to find the bargaining chip. Currently he is obsessed with a cartoon that comes on Saturday afternoons. When he had a good week, I will move heaven and earth to get him home to watch it - and he knows it, he's seen me leave things in the middle just to get him there. When he's had a bad week, and is especially defiant and doesn't respond when I remind him of what his punishment is, he has to have a time-out in his room for the entire program. Knowing that it's his choice to control his behavior in order to get his reward at the end of the week does wonders.
Good luck!

Hayley will go see a physcologist for the first time Jan. 31 I cannot wait!!!!! I have my hopes up he'll have a miracle cure which I know is not possible but there has to be something to make all our lives a little more sane! I just can't handle her anymore, she is soooooo different then her sister. The one thing I have found is when she goes into these "rages" and screams and throws things turn music on LOUD and it's like when you give a screaming baby a bottle! LOL
Hi,
I feel for you. When my son took the meds for the croup (Alburterol, SP??). He was very very difficult and acted very strange (as in possessed). Could some of her issues be related to the meds?
I sometimes wonder that myself....but the ADHD was long before she was diagnosed with Asthma and started on the meds. But I do wonder if all the meds. aggrivate her symptons of the ADHD and possibly ODD. Thanx for the imput! jahayley39475.4494444444Well a diagnosis at age 5 is tentative. It may be worth pursuing a further diagnosis, could be more than ADHD.
Hi,
My son was also ADHD before taking these meds (Steroid type). But, when he took the meds he could NOT sleep and was literally possesed of some other being. He only took the meds for a short time for the croup (a couple different bouts) but it was horrible. She may or may not be ADHD but I think some of the meds could be making matters much worse. Read the side effects of each one.
I know it's very difficult. Good luck. As hard as my son is I try to remember that in his heart he would love to be an easy, happy and content kid. He just isn't. He would rather say NO before he even knows what I am asking.
Just a note, DD had the exact same problems while on Zyrtec and Sungulair, when we stopped them both, the problems stopped. She can take one or the other, but the 2 combined make her go ballistic. Hi, I'm new here. My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD possibly along with that she may have ODD. I am at my witts end! She is a very difficult child. When she wants something she wants it yesterday!!! She will scream at the top of her lungs and cry till you get it for her weather it be 10mins. or an hour she'll scream. We feel blessed if she in bed sleeping by 2am. she just doesn't sleep! Her Kindergarten teacher says she is the most defiant child she has ever dealt with,she purposely does things to get her angry, she lies to her!! On top of all this she has asthma,she takes breathing treatments 2 times a day, she also has enviromental and food allergies she gets a shot once a week for that. She is on Dextrostat for ADHD cromolyn and albuterol for asthma, zyrtec, singulair, nasonex, alaway for allergies plus her weekly shot, she also has an epi-pen and takes chyproheptadine for sleep (doesn't work) she was on valliam at one time for sleep and that didn't work!! I just need somewhere to vent and someone to talk to, I know you are all dealing with alot also but......is anyone up to listening to someone elses? {{{{{HELP}}}}}}
