Personality Change | ADHD Information

I AGREE WITH DIANE, WE WERE ON FOCALIN AND MY DS WAS A COMPLETE ZOMBIE. NOE WE ARE ON VYVANSE AND SO FAR, WEEK 2 HE IS DOING WELL AND NO PERSONALITY CHANGE EXCEPT FOR THE BETTER. GOOD LUCK , WE ARE PLAYING WITH DOSAGE AND SIDE EFFECT RIGHT NOW.My 6 year-old son has been on ADHD medications for almost  a year. We've tried Focalin, Metadate, and he's currently on Vyanase. We've had good results with all three as far as being more focused and able to complete school work. His teachers report that he's very well-behaved when he takes his medication. I'm concerned because my husband and I both notice a drastic change in his personality on the meds. He becomes very quiet and withdrawn. He prefers to play by himself and doesn't seem to enjoying interacting with other children. We've tried taking him off of medication a few times and he does great socially, but then he begins to get in trouble at school for not listening and following directions and/or completing work. I want him to do well academically, but I don't want to see his outgoing, happy little personality fade away. Have you consider play therapy for him?  I have found this to be a great tool for my son.  I've seen my son make great strides and we do this along with meds. The play therapy helps them to express themselves and learn ways to handle their frustrations etc.   They can also do group play therapy which may fit your son's needs, more.  Either way I think he would benefit from this interaction.  My son too is 6 years old and has been going since he was almost 4.  It has been a great tool for him and me.  you know rcam this is a common issue with stimulants. I would keep trying. Is it possible the dose is too high? You really want a balance. This is one of my favorite things about our current med (Strattera), it doesnt make her a zombie. It's still "her", juts takes the "edge off" her symptoms. I think you can achieve this with stimulants too, it's just harder. Watch your dose and keep trying meds until you find "the right one".
