anyone take antidepressants when preg?? | ADHD Information

Does your four year old have ADHD?he hasnt been tested yet but i think it may be possible my 123 year old has it so it may just be cause my older has it.

I took Celexa (with my OB's blessing), throughout my pregnancy. I've learned that the drug works by increasing dopamine in the brain of the user (me)  I'm wondering whether this could cause a lasting effect on the  brain of the fetus, since those affected by ADHD have lower than normal levels of dopamine .  I've tried to research this however can't find anything out there.

I'm wondering whether anyone else with an ADHD child took antidepressants while pregnant or knows anything about this. I may consider having another child, and I still am on these meds and I would like to know how to proceed.

Thank you!

Joan

Well I took zoloft when I had my last child who is now 4 not sure of any side effects HOWEVER I could not take it when I started brestfeeding the dr told me that it would go to the brest milk hope this helpsDid you take meds during the pregnancy with your child that does have ADHD?Also, another question: if your dr. told you not to take while breastfeeding since med would go into breast milk, why did he say okay to taking it during pregancy when it would enter the blood of the fetus through the placenta? That is the same thing that I asked my family Dr.  Tyler was taken to UK when he was born early at 38 weeks (nothing to do with the zoloft though) And they are the ons who told me that I could not breast feed him and take zoloft. And where he was so early I had to breast feed him. And for your other question no I never took anything with my first the 12 year old who has adhd. but like I said I think my four year old has it also cause I see the same signs and things in him that I saw in my 12 year old. But things may be different now. Good LuckThe only meds I took was for my diabetes.

I wouldn't even take tylenol with my first, but he has it.

It's an interesting thing to consider though- would the increased dopamine during gestation cause the brain to not produce enough?  You might search for studies done on the effects of meds during pregnancy.  I'm sure someone is studing it given the number of people taking meds these days.

hey hazard mom

I live close to you , just across the va border in wise co.

I did not take ANYTHING w/ my first preg. He is 12 and I suspect slight adhd at times.

I went off my prozac w/ 2nd preg. and I was an absolute emotional mess. My 5 yr. old ds had just been diagnosed. I sometimes blame my self and wonder if I had taken care of myself and taken prozac would things have turned out diferently. I think we would blame ourselves no matter what..... It is just a mom thing. We love our kids and think we should be able to protect them from everything.

I took Paxil 20mgs a day while I was pregnant, at the time Dr told me the that it was safe during pregnancy (wasn't until a few years later they FDA said that in fact Paxil was not safe to take during pregnancy.)  I've beat myself up many times over this, wondering if it is my fault, did I do this to her by taking the Paxil.  Though on the other hand ADHD run rampant through my family.  Don't beat yourself up over this. I know I have often wondered teh same thing but we are all on here trying to share with others and get advise and support cause we are trying to make life better for our kids. I took 25 mg of Zoloft during my pregnancy.  However, I also took a antinausea med with my OB's blessing (he prescribed).  My son does have ADHD and possibly ODD.  I have wondered many times if either might have caused his problems.  However, my husband and I can both relate to my son's behavior, so I also believe it could just be genetic.  Who knows?  I did not breast-feed because I upped my Zoloft dosage after birth.well I have often heard that it is genetic
