I am new here and I have so many questions but anyway..my son was dx last spring with ADHD/ADD possible ODD (waiting for insurance to kick in March to see ADD psychologist to confirm dx) but currantly my sons pediatrician dispenses the meds (Vyvanse). The pediatrician worked with my sons teacher to verify the ADD dx and we only saw the doctor a few times, but shouldnt he be seen on a regular basis to monitor him on the meds or should we be taking my son to a psychiatrist instead to dispense and monitor??
We use a Psychiatrist for meds, simply because they know more about the meds, side effects, dosages etc. Did the ped make the initial diagnosis? IF so I would see a Neuropsychologist for an evaluation. Meds for ADHD are tricky sometimes, There are several differnt types of ADHD, and different meds work better for different types, so IMO a psychiatrist is always best. edbson39478.3055787037we have had our family Dr doing my DD's meds. He has made her come in each and every month for a weight check and height and to make sure that things are working. After the meds and dosage stabalized after a year+ of taking one med, then we started only coming in every 3 months for the checks and he would write the script and leave it for me to pick up the other 2 months. (have to write a new script monthly)
We have a SERIOUS shortage of psychiatrists in our town so it's almost downright impossible for us to be monitored etc from the psych. But, if you don't have that problem, then that's the better way to go.
If the meds are working and so is the situation with the pediatrician, I think it's ok, BUT if you have to start playing around with doses and different meds, possible side effects, I highly recommend going the psychiatrist route. WE see a psychophamrolocist for meds, and I am so glad we do as we've struggled to get to the right med. Thanks all for the info. I made an appt. with a psychologist that specializes in children with ADD/ADHD and other issues for March. I asked if he prescribes meds and he will coordinate with my son's pediatrician. I think my son needs this especially with his low self esteem.
WE use a pediatric psychiatrist to monitor our meds. I agree, with Diane, that the psych. would be a better source in case dosages or meds need to be changed. They work with these situations everyday.

My pediatrician diagnosed my daugher and dispensed the meds for about a year. It got to the point where he couldn't really do anymore for her and suggested that we see a pschiatrist. The psychiatrist did a complete evaluation on her and has helped us with new meds and it has been good so far. Definitely see a psychiatrist, this is what they are trained in!!We use psychiatric nurse practitioner to manage my daughter's med. She works out of our local Children's Hospital in their Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine department. She is very knowledgeable and accessible. I really like that I get to talk directly to her if I call with questions or concerns. Her appointments are book for an hour long, so we never feel rushed.
