Melissa,
I am raising my 14 yr old gs who has asperger's syndrome[autism spectrum] and ad HHHHHHd, as well as a couple of other cormorbids and LDs. . He has been on adhd meds since the age of 4. He is in 9th grade and working towards a NYS regents diploma.
He has run the gamut of adhd meds The best fit for him is concerta. He also has focalin for occasional rebound. He takes guanfacine and melantonin to help with anxiety and sleep issues.
My 8 year old son has PDD/NOS as well as ADD. He takes 10 MG of AdderallMy son has been diagnosed with High Functioning Autism. He is very bright and
has great cognitive skills however has very little ability to focus and stay on task
at school. He needs to be prompted 10-15 times to complete just 1 assignment.
I recently found out that 80% of autistic children also have add/adhd and that
50% of those are medicated. The doctor at Kennedy-Krieger autism institute
suggested after seeing my son's IEP that stated clearly the lack of focus and attention, that I try medication. I just wanted to know if any of you have autistic
children like mine that are on medication and what medication they are on and
the effects good or bad. Thanks in advance!
Melissa
Hi Melissa,
It's probably worth checking out some autism boards, the people are GREAT! I have a friend who's son has autism and he takes Adderall for focus and Clonidine at night for sleep. He's like night and day when he has not taken his Adderall.
My friend's son who is also high functioning autistic and ADD takes Adderall. He is also on something else, but I don't recall what it is.
